EAST DIVISION LEADER WESTERN KENTUCKY SWEEPS USA 3-0 ON SENIOR DAY

 MOBILE, Ala.  ? The University of South Alabama women’s volleyball team was swept 3-0 (30-15, 30-24, 30-18) by East Division leader Western Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Jag Gym.

 

With the win, WKU maintains its one match lead over Middle Tennessee and Florida International and improves to 25-8 on the season and 14-2 in the SBC.  USA falls to 5-22 overall and 0-15 in Sun Belt play.  The Jags will next close out the regular season at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 10) and FIU (Nov. 12).

 

The Lady Toppers took control from the outset of the opener, jumping out to an early 11-4 lead.  The Lady Jags were able to get no closer in game one as WKU went on to take the 30-15 victory.  Megan Argabright sealed the Hilltopper win with one of her four service aces on the day.  WKU hit a blistering .462 in the first game of the day.

 

In the second contest, it was a tight game throughout much of the game with neither team able to lead by more than two points.  After a block assists from Brittany Blackwelder and Jade Nuss, USA took its first lead of the day at 15-14.  The two clubs continued to battle and with the contest tied at 19-19, Julia Noe put Western Kentucky up for good when she dropped in one of her seven kills.  The Lady Toppers went on to take a 2-0 match lead with the 30-24 victory.

 

With WKU holding a one point advantage at 8-7, Jenna Gideon ignited an 11-2 run that stretched the Lady Topper advantage out to 10 (19-9).  Western Kentucky went on to lead by as many as 13 on two occasions before taking the 30-18 win.  Argabright sealed the victory with a block assists and a solo block. 

 

Lauren Robbins recorded a team-high 10 kills on the day, while Jag senior Kalyn Hundley knotched a team-best 12 digs.  Argabright paced Western Kentucky with 16 kills of her own and Gideon also recorded double figures in that category with 11.  Noe added a double-double for the Lady Toppers finishing with 41 assists and 14 digs.
