HOUMA, La. - The University of South Alabama women’s golf team won its second tournament in as many weeks Tuesday at the 2006 Lady Colonel Collegiate. The Lady Jags shot 303 in the second round and 598 over 36 holes at Ellendale Country Club to win by twenty-three strokes over second place McNeese State. Senior Elin Andersson won the individual title shooting two-over par 146.
“We had a pretty big lead and we just wanted to play like we were tied with everyone else,” said women’s coach TJ Jackson. “We didn’t play as well today, but they played a solid round and just played their game.”
Andersson now has two top-five finishes and a top-15 finish in three tournaments this season. Last week at the Chris Banister-Fall Golf Classic, Andersson shot 11-over par to finish fourth to go along with a 14th place finish at the Wachovia Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
"I was trying to not really think about it and play good golf,” said Andersson. “I was actually two over after four so I just played normal golf.”
Junior Sara Marti followed Andersson on the leader board in fourth place, firing a five-over par 149 for the tournament. Sophomore Darah Newell carded a final round 77, while senior Michelle Toth recorded 80. Sophomore Shirley Harvey rounded out the Lady Jag scoring firing 169 for the 36 hole tournament.
Following USA and MSU was Central Arkansas (624) and Louisiana-Monroe (626) finishing third and fourth, respectively. Nicholls State recorded a 648 to place fifth place.
“Yesterday’s round was cold and windy but today it was perfect so I didn’t think we played as well, but 303 is still pretty good,” said Jackson
