LAFAYETTE, La. ? The University of South Alabama women’s soccer team tied 2-2 in a hard-fought game against Louisiana-Lafayette Friday night. USA now stands at 5-11-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Sun Belt. Louisiana-Lafayette stands at 7-7-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the SBC.
“We played like a team and played hard together tonight,” said head coach Mike Varga. “We went up 2-0 and they came back and tied the game. Most people would have given up, but I like that we kept fighting.”
The Jags recorded an early goal as freshman Sam Stocker took a pass from senior Jenn Edgar and sophomore Cortney Stewart, scoring her team-leading eighth goal in the sixth minute of the game. USA took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Jaguars scored first in the second half as Edgar scored her fourth goal of the season on a break away, giving the Jags a 2-0 advantage in the 67th minute.
The Ragin’ Cajuns answered back in the 71st minute with Courtney Hofland scoring off a corner kick from Bridgette Adorno, cutting the deficit 2-1. UL tied the match just six minutes later on a goal by Taunya Geelhoed.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime periods, but strong defensive efforts by each team prevented any goals from being scored.
Sophomore Kelsie Langford played 110:00 minutes recording five saves. “Kelsie played a great game in goal for us,” said Varga. Also contributing tonight was junior Shoshana Sevel. “Shoshana was a ball-winner for us and worked hard in midfield.”
The Jaguars will take on Louisiana-Monroe Sunday at 1 p.m.
