DENVER, Colo. – The University of South Alabama women’s
soccer team dropped its first conference game of the 2005 season
at Denver on Friday, 3-0. USA falls to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in
the Sun Belt Conference, while Denver improves to 4-5-1 and 1-0
in conference play.
“It was
a tough place to play a good team today,” Jaguar head coach
Mike Varga said. “We had a tough time playing in the altitude
today.”
Denver got on
the board first in the 14th minute as Jenna Billingsley received
a ball from Taryn Hemmings and dribbled up the sideline and scored.
Six minutes later, the Pioneers scored again to go up 2-0. The Jaguars
had the chance to take the early lead as senior Rebecca Kahn put
a shot off the post.
“Rebecca
(Kahn) hit the post early in the game and we could have gone up
1-0,” Varga said. “It may not have changed the outcome,
but it may have increased our energy level had we scored.”
The first half
ended with Denver up 2-0 and outshot the Jaguars 6-1 in the opening
stanza. Jaguar freshman Kelsie Langford had two saves, one in each
half. Denver posted the third goal in the 86th minute off a pass
from the midfield as Lleane Grimditch scored with the second assist
of the game going to Hemmings.
For the game,
USA had three shots, one each by sophomore Sue Ahrens, Kahn and
sophomore Karrie Johnson. The Pioneers tallied 11 shots in the game.
USA travels
to North Texas on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. The Jaguars return
home to face Middle Tennessee on Fri., Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at “The
Cage.”
