MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama Jaguar baseball team will compete in the 37th Annual Intangible Mile Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the USA Track Facility.

“The event is a tradition we have had for awhile to kick off our fall season,” said Jag head coach Steve Kittrell. “It is a good gauge for us to see the condition of our players as we start into fall practice.”

Legendary coaching great Eddie Stanky started the one-mile event in 1969 as the initial start of fall practice and to test the physical shape of his players. The Intangible Mile is one of many South Alabama baseball traditions.

Each player must finish the run within a six-minute timeframe. If a player fails to complete the race within that time, he must run the mile again at a later date.

USA starts fall practice Sept. 19 at Stanky Field in preparation for the upcoming 2006 season. USA will have three weeks of fall practice and then have the annual Red and Blue World Series beginning Sept. 30 and running until Oct. 9. The Jags will begin the 2006 season Feb. 4 with the annual Hall of Fame Game and open the regular season with Grambling State on Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.

In 1999 Brian Christ established a new race record by finishing in 4:57. Last year, Mobile native Tyler Kerns and Jeff Morris won the race as co-champions with a time of 5:50.
