Women's Basketball

INTRODUCING... DEVYN LOWE

One of five true freshmen on the roster, Devyn Lowe signed with the University of South Alabama women's basketball program in the fall of 2016. A graduate of Woodstock High School in Woodstock Ga., she helped the Wolverines to a perfect 25-0 record as a sophomore. She recently sat down with USAJaguars.com to talk about her journey to become a Jaguar, her basketball game and her experience on the trip to Canada.

When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball when I was four years old and I started playing travel basketball when I was six. My played basketball and I grew up watching him in the gym and at games. It was semi natural and I fell in love with the game.

Take me on your journey to South Alabama.
I played exposure basketball for a while and they [the coaching staff] reached out to me. I knew Genesis and then Candice transferred here. I came to a camp at South after my sophomore year and I played well and they offered me a place on the team. I liked Coach Fowler's message and his coaching style. I like how it was a family-style atmosphere. I tore my ACL twice and when I tore it they stuck with me the entire way. There were no iffy vibes from them. It was you need to do this to get back. I felt like I was home here.

Describe your playing style.
I am very fundamental player and thrive in the mental side of the game. I am a shooter and love the three-ball. I play off my IQ. I am not going to the fastest player on the court and blow by you. I like to break my opponents down mentally, see the gaps and where passes are going.

What is the strongest part of your game?
Shooting and my basketball IQ.

Who do you model your game after?
I would say Steph Curry because I am a shooter and I am mental. His story is he is the underrated player and no one expected it out of. His quick, but not super quick and I try to model it after that since we are similar in nature.

What are you trying to improve for this season?
Working on foot speed and putting the ball on the floor to create my shot off the dribble. Players are going to be bigger than me and I have to be more than a catch and shoot shooter.

What is your favorite thing about basketball?
Being out there with my teammates and being a family. Every team I've been on its felt like a family and you got out there and play with your sisters.

Who has been the biggest influence on your basketball career?
My dad. He has gotten me to where I am now. Since I was four he has been there to push and motivate me. My mom has been there too in a different aspect. She is the release from everything as a supportive mom., but my dad's got my butt. We had those nights where I thought 'I can't stand you right now.' It was that, but I see why he pushed and without him I wouldn't have be where I am and have a scholarship. My talent level is where it is at because of him. With my mom and dad though I think I had the perfect balance growing up.

How was your experience on the trip to Canada?
The trip was a great experience. Personally I enjoyed every bit of it. It's a different culture. You go to the city area and then the French area of Quebec. It was a great experience for the team to get outside of the campus and experience each other and grow closer with each other.

What helped you most on the trip to Canada?
I got to see how our team plays and as a mental player that helped me. I was disappointed that I did not get to play, but I like to see things before I do them and it helped me getting to watch my teammates on the trip.
