MOBILE, Ala. –The University of South Alabama women's basketball team will play the second of a four-game homestand against Southern on next Monday at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting between South Alabama and Southern will mark the 19th in the all-time series between the two programs. South Alabama holds a 14-4 record in the series, including a 9-0 edge in games in Mobile. South Alabama won the first meeting at home 78-65 on Jan. 7, 1985. The two schools have played each other 15 times since 1999, and South Alabama has won four of the past five and 11 of the past 13 meetings. Southern won last year's meeting 50-45 last year on Nov. 20 in Baton Rouge, La.
South Alabama dropped its previous game to Southern Miss 57-48 last Sunday. The Lady Eagles outscored the Jaguars 18-6 in the fourth quarter for the win. South Alabama scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter in the first 45 seconds for a 46-39 lead, but went 0-10 from the field the rest of the game in addition to five turnovers. Southern Miss went on a 15-0 run that covered over just eight minutes of action.
Southern Miss had the advantage on the glass, outrebounding South Alabama 39-28. The Lady Eagles used 15 offensive rebounds to score 14 second chance points while South Alabama did not have any second chance points. The Lady Eagles also turned the ball over five times less (22-17).
Chyna Ellis led the Jags in scoring with 13 points on 5-12 field goals and 3-3 from the free-throw line and also had a game-high and season-high five blocks along with six rebounds and two assists. Colby Davis was the only other double-digit scorer with 12 points in addition to two assists. Genesis Perrymond was the leading rebounder with seven boards and had eight points with two three-pointers, four assists, one steal and no turnovers. Off the bench Savannah Jones had nine points after going 3-5 from three, two rebounds and a steal, and Guillory had six points and five rebounds and tied a career-high with three blocks.
Southern (2-3) dropped its last game at No. 12/12 Ohio State 108-73 on Wednesday after defeating Bethune Cookman 61-59 at home on Nov. 22. The Jaguars beat Spring Hill 68-53 in its opener and then dropped two straight road games to Michigan State 70-55 and No. 9/9 UCLA 95-47. The team has averaged 60.8 points per game while allowing 77.0 ppg. The Jags are enjoying a +3.8 turnover margin (15.8-19.6 turnovers per game) and have averaged 10.6 steals per game.
Sophomore guard Skylar O'Bear is one of three players to average over 10 points per game at 11.2 ppg, and has made 14 of the team's 26 three-pointers at a 35.0% clip. Senior guard Cortnei Purnell averages 11.0 ppg and leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 rpg. Junior forward Briana Green is the last player who averages double digits points per game (10.6), and leads the team in steals (16) and assists (16).
Last year Southern finished 19-12, 11-1 to win the regular season SWAC Championship. The Jaguars lost to Alabama State 55-51 in the conference tournament championship and dropped their opening game in the WNIT at Arkansas State 68-45.
