The University of South Alabama women's basketball team will welcome five newcomers to the Jaguar roster during the 2015-16 season. Of the course of the summer, USAJaguars.com will sit down with each of them for Q & A session to help fans see another side of the newest Jags.
The third newcomer for USA fans to get to know is Christen Carter, a 5-10 freshman forward from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. Carter talks about what type of players fans can expect to see on the floor, what area of her game she is looking at improving the most on this season and what her favorite video game is among other topics.
In what ways do you see yourself being able to help contribute to the team this season?"I think I can help the team in rebounding and their ability to start fast breaks and get some transition baskets."
What do you feel is a strength that you bring to the team and why?"I'm very vocal and high energy. I think that will help bring everybody together and energize them. I'm also a good rebounder."
What is one area of your game that you are looking at improving in this season and why?"My defense definitely. I need to be able to guard people on the wing better. I also need to get faster and improve the speed of my feet to be able to cut people off on baseline drives."
Why did you choose to come to South Alabama?"When I came on my visit, I just fell in love. I love the campus, the coaches, the team. I met with one of the professors here and he was really passionate about his job. Everybody here is like that. I just felt it was the right place for me."
What type of player can fans expect to see out on the floor when they watch you play?"High-intensity. Always wanting to do my best. I'm always going to go after the ball on rebounds and try to get some offensive points too."
What do you feel will be the biggest adjustment for you here at South Alabama?"The pace of the game. Just from the practices that I've been in so far, the speed of the game is much faster than it was in high school."
What are you majoring in at South Alabama and what do you plan to do after graduation?"Bio-medical sciences. I plan on going into pre-med and being some type of doctor. I just don't know what kind yet. I'm thinking right now that I want to be an orthopedic surgeon so I can stay around sports and connect one-on-one with the patients. I just like helping people, so that's the field I think I need to be in."
What is one interesting thing that Jaguar fans may not know about you?"I like to play video games."
Is there a favorite game of yours?"Call of Duty: Black Ops."
What does it mean to you to be a Jaguar?"It means a lot to me. It's always been a goal of mine to play at the D-I level. To just be here, be on this team and be a part of something that is on its way up is important. To be able help build the program and one day look back and say that I was part that process would mean a lot to me."
