“OFF THE COURT” WITH GENESIS PERRYMOND

With the addition of eight new players who signed with University of South Alabama women's basketball team this past fall and spring, the 2014-15 Jaguars will definitely have a new look next season for second-year head coach Terry Fowler.  Over the course of the summer, www.USAJaguars.com will sit down with all eight of the newcomers for a brief Q&A session.  The third newcomer for Jaguar fans to get an inside look at is freshman guard Genesis Perrymond.

Perrymond is one of five incoming freshman for USA this fall.  The Lilburn, Ga., native comes to South Alabama after lettering the past four seasons at Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga., under head coach Kirk Call.  Last season as a senior, Perrymond averaged 12.6 points and 4.0 assists per outing for the Lady Panthers after earning Georgia AAAAAA honorable mention all-state honors as a junior.

Last summer, Perrymond also participated in the 2013 Elite Basketball Academy Super 64 Camp.  The 5-8 guard known for her outside shooting touch was rated as a three-star prospect by ProspectNation.com.

In this session of "Off the Court", Perrymond discusses basketball and what the transition to college has been like for her, why she chose to come to USA and her family ties to a basketball legend, among other things.

What do you like most about playing basketball?
"You are always competing and it's not like you can do it by yourself.  You have to rely on people.  You have to pass the ball and trust that the other person is going to do what they are supposed to do."

What do you believe is a strength of your game and why?
"My shooting.  I can shoot the ball pretty well.  I'm also pretty smart out on the floor both offensively and defensively.  I think I do a pretty good job of working hard and being resilient and not giving up."

What factors led to your decision sign with South Alabama?
"My visit was nice.  I just loved it.  The campus and the coaching staff were awesome.  The players were really cool.  It just seemed like a place I could see myself playing over the next four years."

What are you majoring in here at South Alabama and what do you are plan on doing after graduation?
"Biology.  I want to be an anesthesiologist when I get out of college.  I used to think I wanted to be a doctor or a surgeon, but I realized I would rather be an anesthesiologist rather than cut someone open."

For all of the South Alabama fans that will read this on the web site, what kind of player can fans expect to see when they watch you this season?
"I'm fun to watch.  I'm that person that seems to be quiet out on the floor, but you'll be surprised what I can do.  I like to do the little things.  I'm always hustling and trying to make the extra pass.  I'll always have a smiling face while I'm playing."

What do you expect of yourself this season?
"Team-wise, I want us to win.  As a player, I just want to see how well I can develop and push myself.  I want to set a standard this year and just keep improving it every year.  I want to do whatever is necessary for the team.  If coach needs someone to just go into the game and give a solid five or six minutes, I want to be that person this season.  If over time he sees that I'm consistent, he'll continue to put me in games."

What professional or collegiate player do you try to pattern your game after and what is it that you like about their game?
"My favorite player is Stephen Curry for sure.  He wears No. 30 and that's my number.  I love his game.  It's awesome.  He has a confidence about him.  He just knows that he can take someone off the dribble or just pull up and its probably going to go in.  He's a good defender also.  I've just always liked watching him play."

Who would you say has had the biggest impact on your life, either as a person or as a player?
"My dad.  He's always been there to push me.  He wasn't hard on me, but he knew what I was capable of doing and would push me harder to do those things."

You haven't been on campus long, how have the classes and offseason workouts been for you?
"(Classes) haven't been too bad.  It was a little difficult early on, just realizing that you have a test two days after the class began.  Just how everything goes back-to-back.  That was the hardest adjustment.  Once you get everything down, it's not too bad.  The workouts haven't been too bad either.  You get to see how much harder you work in college than you do in high school.  You'll play around in high school, but it's serious in college and you need to make sure you do the little things like stretching and icing down when you can."

Do you have any famous relatives?  Have any of your relatives played sports at the collegiate or professional level?
"My uncle's Dominique Wilkins.  My cousin, Isaiah Wilkins is going to play basketball at Virginia this year."

How close both of them?
"Isaiah and myself are like brother and sister.  We talk all the time.  I know he's going to do great things at Virginia.  My uncle Dominique and I are pretty cool.  I can call him if I need something.  We would try to play against him when we were younger and he would just dunk on us.  We had fun going out there and playing with him."
