GREENWOOD, Ind. – Two University of South Alabama student-athletes were named to the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District® men's and women's track and field/cross country teams, as announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This is the first recognition for seniors Andrew Allen and Laura Labuschaigne.
Allen and Labuschaigne are among representatives from District 4, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater and must be at least a sophomore. Both student-athletes are eligible for the Google Cloud Academic All-America® team to be announced in June.
Allen earned a 3.76 GPA in his undergraduate biology program and currently holds a 4.00 GPA as an Environmental Toxicology graduate student. The Mobile native advanced to the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round for the second consecutive year after a 61.30m (201-01.25) hammer throw at the Jaguar Classic. The mark ranks third all-time in the USA record books and was the first of three hammer victories for Allen this season. He also has the fifth-longest javelin throw in school history, a 62.92m (206-05.00) effort at the 2017 Jaguar Opener.
Labuschaigne finished with a 3.93 GPA while earning her degree in May from USA's accounting program. She set a new 1,500-meter outdoor school record at the 2016 War Eagle Invitational, crossing the line in 4:24.50, and has the fourth-fastest 800-meter race time on the Jaguar performance list with a 2:13.15 finish at the 2017 Tiger Track Classic. The Durbanville, Western Cape, South Africa native also ranks among the top 10 in USA history in three indoor categories: 800-meter (2:14.59), mile (4:50.90) and 3,000-meter run (9:55.28). She was named Outstanding Female Cross-Country Performer of the Year after winning the Sun Belt Championships with a 5k time of 17:35 and taking first place in the Azalea City Classic (17:39) and Louisville Classic (17.42). The senior was voted the 2017-18 Jaguar Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Allen has been named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List – recognizing student-athletes who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher – four times, while Labuschaigne has received the honor twice.
