WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – University of South Alabama women's tennis junior
Alexandria Stiteler has learned of her opponent for the NCAA Singles Championship that starts Wednesday.
Stiteler, ranked No. 110 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will face
Josie Kuhlman of Florida in the round of 64. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CDT. The winner will take on
Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford or No. 4 seed
Samantha Harris of Duke on Thursday.
"This is a great opportunity for Alex to compete against the best of the best on a national scale," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "The margins are very small at this level and if she executes her game plan and stays the course, there is no reason for her not to be able to compete with anyone."
A native of Bradenton, Fla., Stiteler is making the second NCAA Singles Championship appearance of her career; she fell in the opening round in 2016. Stiteler is the first Jaguar to participate in two NCAA Tournaments since 2003.
The three-time First Team all-Sun Belt Conference performer will carry a 21-7 overall singles record into the first round. She went 17-3 this spring – all at the No. 1 flight – and went 2-1 against nationally-ranked competition.
"Overall, it is very impressive that for the third straight year she is clearly the best player in the Sun Belt, as evident by her being the only representative from the conference on the women's side," Keyser commented.
Kuhlman is ranked No. 52 by the ITA. She is 22-7 in singles in 2017-18 – 14-5 in the spring – and is 5-6 against top-125 opponents. She is making her third NCAA appearance, and reached the semifinals as a freshman.
