WOMEN’S GOLF’S SHAARI, CONNELL RECEIVE ALL-CONFERENCE RECOGNITION; SHAARI NAMED SUN BELT FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama women's golf freshman Siti Shaari and senior Madison Connell earned first- and second-team all-Sun Belt Conference honors, respectively, as announced by the league's office Thursday. Shaari was also voted the league's Freshman of the Year after leading the team to a third-place finish in the season rankings. 

Shaari finished fourth in the Sun Belt individual rankings in her first season as a Jaguar with a team-low 74.04 stroke average. She earned six top-10 and two top-20 finishes in 10 events and played 12 rounds at or below par. The freshman shot three straight rounds below par and scored a 209 (-7) in her best tournament of the season, the Bama Beach Bash, to pick up the first individual victory of her career. USA shot a combined 856 (-8) in the event to claim its first tournament win of the season. 

Connell held a 75.38 stroke average in six events this spring after missing the fall season due to injury. She earned three top-10 finishes and played five rounds at or below par. Her best round and finish of the year was a tie for second at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Individual Collegiate Championship, where she shot a three-under-par 69. She shot a one-over-par 217 at the UNF Collegiate to tie for sixth and claim her best three-round total of the season.    

The Jaguars earned top-four finishes in each of its four fall events and top-10s in four of five spring tournaments, including a tie for fifth at the Sun Belt Conference Championship. USA ended the season with a 301.74 scoring average.
