Men's Golf

ON THE ROAD WITH … YANNICK SCHÜTZ

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Yannick Schütz, a sophomore with the University of South Alabama men's golf program, earned an individual berth to the NCAA Kissimmee Regional, where he will report from Kissimmee, Fla., on the experience all week for usajaguars.com. Tonight's report comes after Schütz opened play with a 1-under-par 71 on Monday, ending the first round just outside the top 20 in the individual standings.

It was unfortunate that it basically rained all day.  I woke up in the morning not knowing what to expect with my tee time, it turned out to be an hour later, which was fine.  It was one of those things where you prepare the best you can, but you have to go out whenever they tell you to.  That wasn't really a big deal.

On the first nine I felt pretty sharp, I hit the ball well off the tee although I didn't hit my irons that close today.  My lag putting was terrible, but I was really, really good putting from inside 15 feet which was a big help.

I felt like I had one of my strongest mental performances today.  I kept fighting because I knew it was going to be tough out there and thought at the time that as long as I kept my head I would at least be in contention; it turned out that was the case, I am four [shots] back, which we can definitely make up tomorrow.

We went to the range later today, I fine-tuned my swing a little bit and feel a lot better about it.  I'm really looking forward to tomorrow, especially because the weather is supposed to be a little better in the morning which means that I can go out there and hopefully post a better number.  I know what to expect, anything weatherwise is not going to be a complete surprise.

My game felt good today, I wasn't that emotional so I know I can fight, which is something we wanted to work on.  If I can stick to my game plan again I'm going to go out and hopefully shoot a good number.  I just want to stay in the process and keep doing what we've been doing, which has been very successful.
