MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama men's golf head coach Ben Hannan has added a fourth individual to the 2018-19 roster with the announcement Friday that Kyle Robinson has signed scholarship papers and will join the program in the fall.
Robinson is transferring to South from Arkansas and will have three seasons of eligibility. He joins a recruiting class that also includes Dawson Atkinson (Trussville, Ala.), Jacob Hatter (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Jordan Plunkett (Sterrett, Ala.), who all signed National Letters-of-Intent in the fall and will have four seasons to compete when they enroll in school in August.
"We are very excited to welcome Kyle to the South Alabama golf team," Hannan stated. "Kyle is a very natural, athletic player who has a lot of speed and the ability to shoot under par at any given time, and he had a tremendous junior career having experienced success at the highest levels nationally. Throughout the recruiting process, it became apparent that he was a good fit with our program and will blend well with the current players. Kyle will add depth to an already competitive and talented team, we're excited about him joining us this fall."
Robinson, who hails from Fayetteville, Ark., played in two events for the Razorbacks this season, tying for eighth place at the Gopher Individual in September with a 220 54-hole score while posting the same three-round total — giving him a 73.33 stroke average for the year — competing as an individual at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in the final tournament of the fall.
Coming out of Fayetteville High, he was considered among the top 125 individuals in the country and the top-rated player in the state in the 2017 recruiting class by Golfweek.com. In 2016, Robinson advanced to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open while also reaching match play — where he moved on to the round of 32 — at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after tying for 17th during the stroke-play segment of the tournament. Other highlights from that summer included tying for fifth place at the American Junior Golf Association Hunter Mahan Championship and coming in a tie for seventh at the Junior Byron Nelson Championship, a top-15 performance at the Bass Pro Championship and an invitation to compete at the Ping Invitational where the field included the top 50 junior golfers in the world. Last year he added a top-15 result at the Scott Robertson Memorial as well.
Robinson also helped lead FHS to four consecutive state titles, earning all-state and all-conference honors in the process.
He will join a program that has advanced to match play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship two out of the last three years.
