“INSIDE JAGNATION” — SOUTH ALABAMA ATHLETICS PODCAST — EPISODE 83

MOBILE, Ala. – Coming off a career-best performance, men's track and field student-athlete Niel Giliomee is the guest this week on "Inside JagNation," the official podcast of the University of South Alabama Department of Athletics.

The senior from Bredasdorp, Western Cape, South Africa, posted a mark of 5.35m/17'6½" in the pole vault at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last week to earn a third-place finish; he now stands second in the Sun Belt Conference and among the top 15 in the country in the event.  The performance came just over a month after he came in second place in the pole vault at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship with a 5.28m/17'3¾" height to pick up all-league recognition for the third time in his career.

Giliomee, who ranks second on the school's all-time performance list in the event both indoor and outdoor, has also qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminaries each of the last two outdoor seasons.

In the episode Giliomee discusses preparing for the final home meet of his collegiate career — the South Alabama Invitational will be held at Jaguar Track Thursday-Saturday — his Texas Relays experience, goals for the rest of the outdoor campaign and his relationship with fellow pole vaulter Sean Collins.  Additionally, he explains what he has done to progressively improve each year at South, how he prepares for competition both at practice during the week and once he arrives on site at a meet, the reason he competed in multiple events his first two seasons with the program and what he needed to do to return from an injury that prevented him from participating during the 2017 indoor campaign.  Other topics of the podcast include how old he was when he initially got involved with track, what other sport has helped in his track performance, why he came to South Alabama and his plans after earning his degree this spring.
