UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 4/3

Date: 4/3
Time: 3:30-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Brian Ankerson, R-Fr., OL, Theodore, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Ankerson: "Today Brian was the guy, he took every snap at center and did a really good job fighting through it.  He's a walk-on who is trying to earn a spot, I was really pleased with his effort and thought he got better today."

Defensive Player of the Day: Tyree Turner, So., DL, Stockbridge, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Turner: "Tyree showed up today, he did a good job.  We had some adversity today and I saw him step up and be a leader, I was proud of him for that."

Play of the Day: Kawaan Baker held off a defensive back to make a 35-yard touchdown catch on a throw from Cole Garvin midway through the first team period of the afternoon.

Team period highlights: There were three 10-minute team periods as a part of the first practice of the week, with the first two including third-down situations for the first time this spring.

Miscellaneous Notes
-The Jaguars opened up the second half of the spring season with their first workout in 11 days after returning from Spring Break.
-Travis Reed and Nigel Lawrence sparked the Jaguars' defensive effort with interceptions during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills and the first team period, respectively.
-Jalen Thompson was credited with a pair of passes broken up, with Jay Woods adding one as well.
-Not only did Turner stop a runner in the backfield for a loss during the final team period of the practice, he also assisted on a pair of sacks; Chris Henderson was also credited with two sacks during team period play.
-In addition to Garvin's touchdown pass in the initial team period of the day, both he and Dallas Davis threw for scores to wrap up the skeleton passing drills segment of practice.
-Garvin completed all but one of his pass attempts in all drills, while Evan Orth connected on five of his first six throws and Davis ended up 10-of-16 passing.
-Davyn Flenord and Khameron Taylor were responsible for the other touchdown catches.
-Baker and Tra Minter finished with four receptions each to pace the Jag offense, while Jordan McCray, Malik Stanley, Jamarius Way and Jalen Wayne each caught multiple balls.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Tuesday's practice: "It was our first day back and you could tell there was a lot of rust.  We've got six good practices left, and we need to use every one of them to get better.  We have to become more physical — the only way to do that is to practice physically — and we need to get into good enough condition to be able to do that."
-On the team's retention from the first half of the spring season: "The retention wasn't bad, the guys remembered their plays and their assignments.  We just have to keep pushing ourselves to get better."

Up next: The Jags will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Thursday with their 10th practice of the spring campaign at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility.
