NEW ORLEANS – After helping lead the South Alabama softball team to a Sun Belt Conference series win over Georgia State over the weekend, freshman infielder Kamdyn Kvistad and junior pitcher Alexis Reid were named the Community Coffee Player and Pitcher of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.
The player of the week honor is the first for Kvistad, while it is the second for Reid as she earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors last season. The duo join Devin Brown who earned pitcher of the week accolades on March 13.
Kvistad's player of the week selection marks the 15th in program history, while Reid's marks the 22nd overall. Â
Kvistad posted her best offensive numbers of the season in the three-game series versus Georgia State. For the series versus the Panthers, Kvistad was 7-for-8 (.875) at the plate with three runs scored, two doubles, a home run, 4 RBI and a 1.500 slugging percentage.
Kvistad reached base all three of her plate appearances in the series opener against the Panthers as she was 2-for-2 with a walk and a RBI. The freshman made her first start of the season at first base in game two and was instrumental in helping the Jags pick up a 10-3 win to even the series as she was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. Kvistad doubled and scored in the second inning for South Alabama's first run of the contest and then during the Jags' seven-run third, Kvistad plated the fourth run of the inning with a RBI single to center. The Lake City, Fla., native came around to score later in the inning on Megan Harris' bases-loaded walk, extending South's lead to make it 6-3.
The four hits and the two doubles were both career-highs and helped spark South Alabama to a season-high 18 hits, including a school record six doubles and seven extra-base hits.
In the series finale, Kvistad gave the Jags the lead for good as she blasted her third home run of the season to lead off the second and put South up 1-0. The next inning, she capped off a four-run third with a sacrifice fly to right to score Kristian Foster and make it 5-0. Before her third-inning sacrifice fly in the third, Kvistad had reached base safely in each of her first eight plate appearances and had a hit in each of her previous seven at-bats.
Reid came through in a big way over the weekend tossing a couple of complete-game victories over the Panthers picking up both of the Jaguars' wins in the series and didn't allow an earned run in her 14 innings of work.
For the week, Reid finished with a 2-0 record and scattered 16 hits, striking out eight and only allowing three unearned runs in the top of the first of game two of the series. Georgia State came into the game with 53 extra-base hits and had four in the series opener, but against Reid, the Panthers were only able to record one double.
After allowing the three unearned runs in the opening frame of game two, Reid was solid in the circle as she tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and allowed just six hits – all singles – after the first inning with three of those coming in the seventh to load the bases. Reid struck out Remington Hasty swinging for the second out and then got Kristin Hawkins to ground back out to the circle for the final out of the contest.
In the series finale, Reid worked around six hits and was able to get three double plays behind her en route to picking up the shutout victory to clinch the series. Â
The Jaguars will begin a four-game road trip at McNeese State on Wednesday with first pitch versus the Cowgirls set for 6 p.m. at Cowgirl Diamond.
