Box Score (PDF)

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama left-hander Andy Arguelles and right-hander Zach Greene combined to limit No. 28 Southeastern Louisiana to one run on three hits in a 6-1 Jaguar victory Tuesday at Stanky Field.

Arguelles allowed one run on three hits in five innings, and Greene tossed four perfect innings to lead the Jaguars to their first win over SLU since 2016, which snapped a three-game Jaguar losing skid in the series.

South Alabama will return to action this weekend when it travels to Atlanta for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Georgia State, with game one scheduled for Fri., March 23, at 5 p.m. (CT).

GAME FACTS
- USA jumped out to a one-run lead in the top of the first inning. Travis Swaggerty drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single to right field by Dylan Hardy and a throwing error by SLU right fielder Trenon Trosclair on the play allowed both runners to move into scoring position with no outs. Brendan Donovan then delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Swaggerty for a 1-0 Jaguar lead.
- Swaggerty led off the bottom of the third inning with a double to left field, and scored one batter later on an RBI single back up the middle by Hardy to double the USA lead at 2-0. Hardy advanced to second with no outs on a wild pitch from SLU right-hander Corey Gaconi. Wells Davis reached on a fielding error by SLU first baseman Kyle Schrimpf that moved Hardy to third to put runners at the corners with no outs. Donovan then reached on a fielder's choice on a grounder to first that allowed Hardy to score for a 3-0 Jaguar advantage.
- USA pushed its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Swaggerty lifted a 1-1 pitch from Gaconi over the right field wall for a two-out, two-run home run, his fifth of the season, following a two-out single from Will Luft.
- SLU scored its first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Trosclair drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single by Brennan Breaud, advanced to third on a groundout to first by Cody Grosse before a wild pitch from Jaguar right-hander Zach Greene allowed him to score from third with one out and cut the Jaguar lead to 5-1.
- USA added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh. Hardy drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout to right field by Davis and scored on a two-out RBI single to left field by Donovan with the final run of the contest.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

- On ending the losing streak to Southeastern Louisiana:
"Southeastern Louisiana is a great baseball team. We have the utmost amount of respect for them. The game is never over until you record that 27th out versus them, and they know that versus us. They got the better of us the last couple of years, and it was good to win one from a quality team."

On how close to complete game tonight was:
"I would say that was our best game of the year across the board – pitching, defense, timely hitting, guys getting on. There wasn't a whole lot of hits, but it's when you get them. I thought we played a complete game."

On Travis Swaggerty in the leadoff spot:
"He hit there for us all year his freshman year. It was a numbers thing. I looked at the on-base percentage and looked at (Dylan) Hardy. Hardy and Swaggerty are high on-base guys, but Hardy was doing better with runners in scoring position so I flip-flopped them. (Brendan) Donovan's on-base percentage is through the roof for a guy who hasn't really hit his stride. I thought Donovan has been really good the last week-and-a-half, two weeks. He had some big at-bats for us tonight. One through five I think we had five or six RBI in there. I thought those guys at the top through the five-hole did a really nice job."

On Andy Arguelles' performance tonight:
"Andy (Arguelles) was fantastic tonight. That's the guy we saw last year at times against really good teams. He was a little inconsistent as a freshman, but that's the guy we saw all fall and into the early spring, even when he was down with a little tendonitis. That was a big shot in the arm for us getting Andy back like that. Velocity was good and I thought he did a really nice job tonight."
