THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
South Alabama is unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1) after starting the season 0-4. The team's unbeaten streak and win streak (3) is the longest in the Sun Belt.
The Jaguars are 3-0 in Sun Belt play for the third time in school history. All three occurrences have happened in the last three years. The program has been 4-0 just once, in 2015.
The Jags are 32-5-2 in conference games since the start of the 2014 season.
USA is 0-2-1 in road games this season.
South Alabama has scored first and outshot its opponent seven times in the last eight games.
Rio and Steffi Hardy each scored a goal Sunday vs. Georgia State. It marked the fifth time in their career, and second since 2014, that they recorded a goal in the same game.
Rio currently leads the team with four goals and nine points. She ranks tied for fourth and fifth in goals per game and points per game in the Sun Belt in those categories, respectively.
Rio currently resides alone in third place in USA history in game-winning goals (10), and is one goal from fourth and two points from fifth on the school's career lists.
The Jags have won their last three games decided by one goal after dropping their first three.
Each of the last 12 meetings with Troy have been decided by one goal or fewer. All 12 contests have been by a 0-0, 1-0 or 2-1 scoreline.
The two schools traded 1-0 wins last season. Troy won in Mobile and South Alabama returned the favor in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.
The Trojans ended the Jaguars' 33-match conference unbeaten streak last year, which was the 11th-longest run in NCAA history.
Georgia Southern has not scored against South Alabama since joining the conference in 2014. USA has outscored GS 11-0 in the last four victories.
Troy leads the league in shutouts with five, but Georgia Southern's Lauren Karinshak tops all SBC goalkeepers with four.
MOODIE'S QUOTES ON THE WEEKEND
On going on the road for the first team in Sun Belt play: "We're in good shape heading into the weekend. Is it going the way we thought it would? No, but is it going the way we hoped it would in the conference? Yes. We told the team we want to be title contenders so we have to win on the road. If we want to defend our title it's something we're going to have to do and we haven't done it yet this year. We have two tough games on the road against two tough teams. I don't think there's anything that they're going to throw at us that we haven't seen."
On the team's confidence growing with each win: "Yes, it has to be, because we were struggling to score goals, we were losing games by a goal, and couldn't get across the finish line. Against Georgia State, I thought we were in total control. When they scored, I still didn't second guess whether or not we were going to get the job done. That's where that confidence comes in – the girls know they can see it across the line. We have too many good players on the field to not score somewhere. The big question for us will definitely fall defensively and with the goalkeeping. We have to keep teams from scoring on us so easily and I think we've done a good job on that lately."
On preparing for Georgia Southern: "They had a good win against Coastal Carolina, and against Louisiana-Lafayette, a team who's in form, they were able to take two goals and it could've been more. They're a team that's unpredictable – you never know what you're going to get from them. Defensively, they've been unlocked in every shape and form that the game can offer – set pieces, free kicks, run of play, you name it. Being the team we are, I think we can capitalize in a lot of different ways. They've done a good job defensively. At times they look good and are hard to break down. Offensively, they've been able to put together some tasty little goals, like the one they scored against Georgia State."
On the rivalry with Troy: "We haven't really thought about Troy because we're always one game at a time, but it's in the back of our head and we know that the rivalry in itself is something that's new for me. Troy seems to be our rival, but I think everyone in women's soccer is our rival because we're a team that's won the league the last three years and the tournament the last four. Every team is going to give that extra 10 percent and I think Troy will have that little extra in the tank. We obviously got to see them play when they were here in our tournament, so we know that they're more than capable of causing havoc and creating damage, but it's a game that we have to make sure we're up for. If we play our best and they play their best, I think we can win. I don't want to sound overly confident, I just trust the ability of the team that I've got. If we're fully fit and we're ready to go, we've got a really good team."
