SOCCER PLAYS FIRST OF TWO 2017 EXHIBITIONS MONDAY AGAINST LSU

South Alabama Jaguars (0-0) vs. LSU Tigers (0-0)
August 7, 2017 • 6 p.m. • Orange Beach Sportsplex (1,500) • Orange Beach, Ala.

Notes

The regular-season series between the two schools is tied 5-5. South Alabama won the last meeting 4-0 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament at The Cage.

LSU won the previous three meetings by a combined score of 13-0.

The Jaguars have to replace five starters from 2016, the program's most since replacing six to start the 2014 campaign. That team posted a 19-3-1 record and went unbeaten in 18 consecutive matches.

USA lost four starters at defender and defensive midfield: Jemma Purfield (D), Jana Loeber (D), Alexis Jordan (D) and Monique Autmon (MF).

South Alabama had its 33-match conference unbeaten streak and 19 straight Sun Belt wins snapped last season by Troy. The unbeaten run is 11th in NCAA history, and the 19 consecutive wins are 23rd.

The Jaguars have 34 shutouts in the last three seasons, the most by any Sun Belt school over that span. The 12 accumulated last season tied the school record set in 2014.

Justice Stanford set new school records in goals against average  (0.78) and consecutive shutout minutes (639:36), and her 10 clean sheets was second. She led the conference in both GAA and shutouts.

Chardé Hannah is currently tied for second at South Alabama in both career points (84) and goals (35), and second in game-winning goals (11).

Danielle Henley was tabbed to an All-SBC team for the third time last year (1st in 2015, and 2nd in 2014 and 2016). She could be the first Jaguar since 2005 — and second ever — to be a four-time all-Sun Belt performer. She would be the only one to have a first-team nod during that stretch.

Rio Hardy is currently tied for fifth at South Alabama in career goals (27) and seventh in career points (66). She is three points away from sixth.

South Alabama is the first Sun Belt school to win three straight regular-season titles, and the second to win four consecutive tournament crowns (Denver 2006-09).

USA had six players named to the 2016 All-Sun Belt teams — three on the first team and three on the second — the most by any school.

The Jaguars won three individual awards from the Sun Belt. Jemma Purfield was named the player and defender of the year, and Alexis Jordan was named the freshman of the year.

USA has had the freshman and an offensive or defensive player of the year in each of the last four years. Lauren Allison and Chardé Hannah won the freshman and offensive awards in 2013 and 2014, respectively, Nini Rabsatt-Smith won the defensive honor in 2014, and Purfield was the freshman of the year that same season, and Steffi Hardy was the defender of the year in 2015.

South Alabama's all-conference honorees: Purfield, Rio Hardy and Jordan on the first team and Monique Autmon, Hannah Godfrey and Danielle Henley on the second.

The Jaguars went 0-3-1 in overtime games in 2016 after going 5-1-1 the previous three seasons. The team broke the school record for double-overtime contests in a single season.
