“INSIDE JAGNATION” — SOUTH ALABAMA ATHLETICS PODCAST — EPISODE 56

MOBILE, Ala. – With the University of South Alabama football team opening the season at Ole Miss Saturday night, the guest this week on "Inside JagNation" — the official podcast of Jaguar Athletics — is assistant coach Kane Wommack.

Wommack, a member of the Rebel coaching staff as a graduate assistant during the 2012 and '13 campaigns, discusses the challenge of preparing for the offensive units of Ole Miss and Oklahoma State the first two weeks of the year, what his group does best when it is playing well, and what goes into putting together a game plan for an opponent.  In addition to explaining his general defensive philosophy, he talks about his expectations going into his first season on the Jaguar coaching staff last fall, how to fit personnel to different schemes and how much more comfortable he believes South's defense is in its second year in his system.

Other topics in the podcast include when he knew he wanted to be a coach, his first memories of attending practice with his father Dave — a longtime collegiate coach who was the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss the last five years before retiring — his time as a collegiate player at both Arkansas and Southern Mississippi, why he was interested in coming to USA and his thoughts on his sons' potential interest in football.

Wommack earned his undergraduate degree from Southern Miss in 2009, going on to work at Tennessee-Martin the next year and Jacksonville State in '11.  After a two-year stint in Oxford, he became the defensive coordinator at Eastern Illinois, where his efforts helped the Panthers to a berth in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs and an appearance in the final top-25 poll in 2015.  Last fall, the Jags were among the most improved scoring defenses in the nation under his direction.
