MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama soccer program has announced the final six members of its incoming freshman class.
Added to the roster for the fall are
Julianna Abrams,
Anita Ágústsdóttir,
Selma Björgvinsdóttir,
Georgia Bostic,
Abigail Mills and
Sonja Reichel.
"With the players that they'll come in contact with every day, all of these young ladies are going to develop and flourish," head coach
Richard Moodie said. "Having lost some great players from last year, there will be some pressure on these recruits coming in, but I think having the group that we have here at South Alabama, they'll be welcomed with open arms."
Julianna Abrams – Midfielder
Pace High School
Pace, Fla.
Led Patriots to district championship and a regional final appearance in 2014… Led the state in assists her sophomore season… Totaled 23 goals and 87 assists in her career… Played 12 years with the Gulf Coast Texans… Reached final four in the state cup… W-20 national runner up and Super-Y national champions… Named to Puerto Rican U20 national team.
Moodie on Abrams: "To us, Julianna is a player that can come right in and contribute. She's a hard worker and she always gives 110 percent. She has a lot of talent, but whether she has the confidence to come out year one or year two, that will be in her hands. She just made the Puerto Rican U20 national team, so if that's any indication of the level of player that she is, we feel like she'll come in and fit in to the culture we have at South Alabama."
Aníta Ágústsdóttir – Defender
Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands
Akranes, Iceland
Member of Knattspyrnufélag ÍA for 12 years… Helped team to League 1 championship in 2015 and second team cup championship in 2014… Named ÍA's second team most promising player in 2014 and the first team's most promising player in 2015… Capped at the U19 level for Iceland.
Moodie on Ágústsdóttir: "Anita has had a couple of caps on the U19 national team so she is a very cultured soccer player and understands the game. She's going to fill some holes that we have and can play a variety of positions – she's not locked in at just one. A player like that can bring a lot to a squad, especially when you consider that we play every Friday and Sunday. She's a girl that could play one position on Friday, and can fill in where we need her on Sunday."
Selma Björgvinsdóttir – Midfielder
Commercial School of Iceland
Reykjavik, Iceland
Played previous two seasons for club team FH Hafnarfjordur in Iceland… Prior to joining FH, spent five seasons at Valur… Made 17 appearances – 16 starts – for FH in 2016.
Moodie on Björgvinsdóttir: "All of the girls we've announced have been heavily recruited by other schools and Selma is one of those kids. We're very fortunate that she chose to come to South Alabama. We see her fitting in to a certain position, having lost Monique Autmon at the center midfield position. We feel like she can come in and control the tempo of the game and help us play at the tempo we want to play."
Georgia Bostic – Defender
Houston County High School
Warner Robins, Ga.
Four-year varsity starter… Led the Bears to a 2016 region championship and the first round of the state playoffs… Named first team all-region and 2016 region player of the year, and team most valuable player… Spent two seasons with AFC Lightning in Atlanta, Ga.
Moodie on Bostic: "Georgia unfortunately fell victim to Armstrong State discontinuing their soccer program after merging with Georgia Southern, so she decided to de-commit. With the timing of our staff coming in, she became available. We really feel like she could come in and contribute year one. She's athletic and educated in the game of soccer, and well coached by Gavin McLeod of AFC Lightning. As long as she's mentally right and ready, she can really contribute to this squad."
Abigail Mills – Midfielder
Highbury Fields School
London, England
Spent 2008-15 with Arsenal Ladies and 2016-17 with Chelsea Ladies… Won FA Cup and league title with Arsenal Ladies U17s, and Development League championship with Arsenal's U21s… Represented England against the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands… Won a silver medal in the 800m in the London Youth Games… Received the Jack Petchey Award, Islington School's Exceptional Performance Award, and was named Islington School's Primary Sportswoman of the Year.
Moodie on Mills: "Abigail Mills became one of our first signees after I was hired. The development she's had thus far has been phenomenal. She's a natural athlete and by trade is a soccer player. She's a fantastic young lady and a great talent. She understands the game tactically very well, but we feel like Abi could come in and start on a very veteran team."
Sonja Reichel – Defender
Unna, Germany
Bad Axe (Mich.) High School
Earned varsity letters in soccer and cross country for Bad Axe HS as an exchange student… Spent two years as member of Bayer 04 Leverkusen U17 team (2015-16), where she served on the team council.
Moodie on Reichel: "She's a center back and we have two returning veterans in Hannah Godfrey and Steffi Hardy but not much depth. Her challenge is to come in and make them better and play them out of the position. I think she has the ability to do it, but if it's not year one, we feel like she can take over that position going forward and make it her own."
