Date: 7/30
Time: 10 a.m.-12:10 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads
Offensive Player of the Day: Jalen Tolbert, Fr., WR, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Tolbert: "Jaylen Tolbert really stuck out today, a true freshman receiver from McGill-Toolen. He made a lot of plays and a lot of big plays, and for a rookie to come out here on day one and do this is impressive."
Defensive Player of the Day: Jeremy Reaves, Sr., S, Pensacola, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Reaves: "Anytime you start off fall camp, it's the guys with the most amount of experience that seem to show out. He's done a great job of taking care of his body. He's gained 20 pounds, which is something we asked him to do. He still moves really well and functions really well out here. He's executing at a higher level than most everybody else right now and that's very impressive."
Play of the Day: On the first-team unit's second set of five plays during the lone 7-on-7 segment, Dallas Davis hit found Jalen Tolbert who went up between a pair of defenders to make a leaping grab for a 22-yard gain along the right sideline.
Team period highlights: There was no team period, but the Jaguars went through just under 30 reps during a 7-on-7 period lasting approximately 12 minutes.
Miscellaneous Notes
-With 12 minutes devoted to one 7-on-7 period, the Jags spent the rest of the two-hour workout focusing on individual and a pair of special teams drills.
-In the 7-on-7 segment beginning at midfield, the South quarterbacks went a combined 21-for-27 and a touchdown. Working with the first-team unit, Davis was 8-of-10 during the period, while Cole Garvin was 9-of-10 and Evan Orth was 4-of-7 with a touchdown.
-The 7-on-7 drill was capped off as Orth hit Malik Stanley down the right sideline for a 30-yard touchdown reception on the final play.
-After an incompletion on the first play of the 7-on-7 drill, the Jaguar quarterbacks hit their next nine passes before another incompletion.
-Andrew Reinkemeyer led the Jags with three receptions, while five other players — Tolbert, Jahmir Taylor, Parker Mason, Davyn Flenord and Sa'Mory Collier— also had multiple receptions.
-Neiko Robinson and Jay Woods each had three solo tackles, while Jeremy Reaves added two.
Head coach Joey Jones
-On the first practice of the season: "There was pretty good energy out there today. I thought the guys worked hard. It's hard to tell a whole lot without pads on, but I saw some really good things happening at receiver. I thought our young freshman receivers looked really good out there. They've got a ways to go mentally, but they got talent. Defensively, I thought our safeties played really good. It's just hard to tell much right now without pads on, but they are doing what we are asking them to do."
-On what the focus is during the early part of preseason camp: "A lot of teaching. We're trying to learn the fundamentals of the game and also trying to get them in shape. You can't come out the first day of practice in pads and start hitting each other, so we are in shorts for right now to teach them the fundamentals and put the scheme in."
-On the new set up for fall camp practice with the elimination of the previous 'two-a-day' format: "We could only get in two {two-a-days] last year because of the way things worked out. We won't change much of what we do in the new format. In mornings, we work on the physical things and then in the afternoon we have walk throughs which are a good mental teaching time in."
-On how he thought Dallas Davis looked: "[Dallas Davis] looked good. He didn't look much different from last year to me. I know we are limiting his throws a bit, I think he threw around 80 balls today, but he looked pretty good throwing it."
Dallas Davis
-On impressions of the opening practice of the year: "We've really got a lot of talent [on offense] and we need to use that the best we can this year and get better each and every day."
-On the energy of the team on the first day of camp: "First day of camp everybody is going to be hyped. Everyone is going to be hoot and hollering and everything like that. If we can maintain that daily and get better at what we do, that's what is going to help put us over the edge
-On how he felt out there being back on the field: "It felt good. They had me on a pitch count, but it's nothing new. I'm going to be on that throughout the season, just to make sure I am taking care of my shoulder. That's the first time I've practiced since the bowl game, so it's been a while, but it felt good to be with the guys."
Jeremy Reaves
-On the Jaguars' first practice: "It was good. You know everyone came out here focused. We had a few technique issues here and there, but we're just shaking the rust off."
-On if there is added pressure for the defense this season: "We put pressure to ourselves. We have our own expectations that we set at the beginning of the year and we want to be the best defense in the conference and in the country. That's our expectations. We are not really worried about what people outside of the program say. We want to focus on us."
-On working on fundamentals during these first couple of practices: "[Fundamentals] are the most important part of the game. People get so caught up in the physical aspects of football, but it's more mental and fundamental than anything because technique will put you in the right spot every time. The most important part of football actually is technique film and fundamentals."
Up next: South Alabama will be back on the practice field Monday from 10 a.m.-noon at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility.
