MOBILE, Ala. – Ten former University of South Alabama baseball standouts are currently in the middle of their respective Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball seasons.
The Boston Red Sox recalled right-hander Ben Taylor from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. Taylor tossed one scoreless relief inning against Toronto Wednesday night, and allowed just one hit while striking out one. In 12 relief appearances with the Red Sox this season, Taylor is 0-1 with one save and a 6.14 ERA, and has struck out 15 batters against nine walks in 14 2/3 innings pitched.Â
In 63 games played with the Washington Nationals this season, Adam Lind is batting .323 with eight doubles, eight home runs, 32 RBI, 23 runs scored and a .564 slugging percentage. This season marks Lind's 12th in MLB, and just his second in the National League. He spent nine seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (2006-14), one season with the Milwaukee Brewers (2015) in the NL and one year with the Seattle Mariners (2016).
David Freese is batting .248 with eight doubles, six home runs, 27 RBI and 28 runs scored in 74 games played with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Freese hit .321 with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI in 18 games played in April, but is hitting just .224 since the beginning of May.Â
Jordan Patterson earned Pacific Coast League Player-of-the-Week honors for the second time this season earlier in the week after batting .471 with four home runs, nine RBI and a .526 on-base percentage in four games from July 10-16 with the Albuquerque Isotopes, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
Patterson was named the PCL Player of the Week for the week of June 19-26 after hitting .423 in six contests. In 89 games played this season, Patterson is batting .288 with 23 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs, 67 RBI, 52 runs scored and three stolen bases.Â
Right-hander Kevin Hill was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for his effort from June 26 – July 2. Hill did not allow a hit and did not issue a walk in 7 2/3 scoreless relief innings, which spanned two appearances, to become the first Quad Cities River Bandit, the Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. In 14 relief appearances this season, Hill is 2-1 with three saves and has posted a 3.60 ERA with 30 strikeouts against 10 walks in 25 innings pitched.
Left-hander Locke St. John is 1-4 with one save in 17 relief appearances with the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, of the Midwest League. St. John has posted a 2.72 ERA and struck out 37 batters against just eight walks in 36 1/3 innings pitched this season.
Outfielder Cole Billingsley is batting .266 with 16 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 24 RBI, 36 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 80 games played with the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, of the South Atlantic League. In 16 games played in the month of July, Billingsley is hitting .324 with three doubles, four RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases. The Cropwell, Ala., native has hit safely in his last five games entering Thursday's game at Augusta.
Right-hander Matt Peacock has not allowed a run in nine relief appearances with the Hillsboro Hops, the Short-Season A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, of the Northwest League. Peacock has struck out 11 batters and issued only two walks in 12 1/3 innings pitched, and has posted a 0.41 WHIP.
Right-hander Randy Bell is 0-1 in five starts with the Everett AquaSox, the Short-Season A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, of the Northwest League. He has struck out nine and issued just two walks in 11 innings pitched.Â
Catcher Jared Barnes was selected in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins, but has not appeared in a game so far this summer following a finger injury which forced him to miss the final two regular-season games and the entire 2017 postseason at South Alabama.
