SOUTH’S ALFORD NOMINATED FOR AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM®

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Monday 146 nominees for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, with the list including University of South Alabama senior Tre Alford.

Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has brought together a select group of college football players from across the country to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.  While players are often recognized for their accomplishments and achievements on game day, these student-athletes have made significant contributions to the greater good of society, inspiring future generations of young athletes and the larger college football community.

In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

Alford is a three-time member of the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll, and he received his exercise science degree from South in May.  Off the field during his time as a Jaguar, he has volunteered at Special Olympics and Wilmer Hall Children's Home events while also participating in the reading program at UMS-Wright Preparatory School.  Alford has also taken part in events on campus sponsored by the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and helped USA freshmen move into their dorm rooms each of the last two years.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Alford recorded 37 total tackles — including 3½ behind the line of scrimmage — in his first season as a starter during the 2015 campaign, adding two passes broken up and a forced fumble.  He was set to once again start on the interior of the defensive line last fall, but suffered an injury during summer workouts that forced him to miss the year.

Alford heads into his final season at the collegiate level having received preseason all-Sun Belt recognition from both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Publications.

Comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, the final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.  From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2017 Good Works Team®.  Two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® member Tim Tebow will headline the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel.
