2017 D1Baseball.com All-Americans

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball catcher Jared Barnes was named a D1Baseball.com All-American, as announced by the organization on Thursday.

Barnes was named third-team All-America by the organization, marking the third consecutive year a Jaguar has earned All-America accolades. The Tallahassee, Fla., native was a first-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection after leading the league slugging percentage (.768) and on-base percentage (.504) during conference games, tied for the league lead in home runs (10), ranked second in total bases (73) and third in batting average (.368) and RBI (32).

Barnes was a second-team all-South Central Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings on Wednesday. And on Tuesday he was selected in the eighth round (239th overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Miami Marlins.

He was named the National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on May 16 after earning National Player-of-the-Week honors from Collegiate Baseball and SBC Player of the Week on May 15.

Barnes finished the season ranked second in the SBC in slugging percentage (.605), fourth in home runs (13), tied for fourth in sacrifice flies (5), sixth in RBI (50), 13th in batting average (.320) and 15th in OBP (.416).

He becomes the program's 28th All-American with Wednesday's announcement, and is the first Jaguar catcher to earn All-America honors since David Doss (2009). Barnes joined Doss and former MLB first-round draft pick Glenn Borgmann (1971) as the only Jaguar catchers in program history to earn All-America accolades.
