NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama freshman Rasmus Karlsson concluded his first season as a member of the Jaguar men's golf program by earning all-Sun Belt Conference recognition, as he was named second-team all-league Wednesday.
The honor comes after the native of Fiskars, Finland, led the Jags with a 73.30 stroke average and four top-10 finishes during the 2016-17 campaign.
Karlsson competed in all 12 events for USA this season, shooting par or better on six occasions while having his score count toward the team total in all 27 rounds he was in the Jaguars' lineup. He was South's top finisher at four events, first accomplishing the feat when he tied for sixth place individually at the Bridgestone Match Play in September. After turning the trick again at the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana State, Karlsson began the spring campaign by tying for third — his best result of the year — at the USA Individual Tournament and then followed up with a tie for sixth at Auburn's Tiger Invitational; at the latter event he carded scores of 69 in the first round and 68 on the final day.
He also posted a 68, the lowest 18-hole score his first season at the collegiate level, in the in the second of three rounds at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational to wrap up the fall schedule, while he recorded a career-best 54-hole total with a 6-under-par 210 at the Tiger Invitational.
And, Karlsson helped the Jaguars win the Southern Collegiate Match Play last month with a pair of victories as USA defeated Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana Tech to earn the title.
After ranking among the top 20 in the Sun Belt both in stroke average and score against par, he becomes the 64th all-conference honoree in program history. It marks the 27th consecutive season that at least one Jag has received all-league recognition.
