ATLANTA – Former University of South Alabama wide receiver Josh Magee will have an opportunity to join teammate Gerald Everett in the National Football League after signing a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons. The organization released a list of 21 individuals it came to an agreement with on Monday afternoon.
Magee matched Everett — who was chosen in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday — with 49 catches in 2016, pacing the Jaguars with 822 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions as he was named second-team all-Sun Belt Conference following his senior year. In addition to posting the second-highest single-season yards receiving total in program history, Magee set a new school standard with four 100-yard games while averaging 16.78 yards per catch.
He opened last season with seven catches for 113 yards and a score, helping the Jags to a 21-20, come-from-behind win at Mississippi State, the team's first-ever over a Southeastern Conference opponent. Magee followed up with six receptions against Georgia Southern and No. 19 San Diego State — South recorded its first defeat of a nationally-ranked opponent against the latter — before hauling in seven passes for 138 yards and a score at Louisiana-Monroe. He had four catches in each of the final three outings of the regular season, finishing with 135 yards and a touchdown in the finale to help the Jaguars beat New Mexico State and qualify for a postseason bowl game.
In the final appearance of his collegiate career, Magee opened the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl with a 75-yard touchdown catch before going on to finish with five receptions for a career-high 154 yards against Air Force.
In his first year with the Jags, the Hoover, Ala., resident posted 23 catches for 504 yards and three touchdowns, ranking fourth in the country with an average of 21.91 yards per reception. He is among the top 10 all-time in six different statistical categories at USA, setting school standards with six 100-yard games and an average of 18.42 yards per catch while racking up 72 receptions for 1,326 yards and eight scores; Magee finished his career with 1,414 all-purpose yards.
