IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame released the members of its 2017 Hampshire Honor Society on Wednesday, with the University of South Alabama's Roman Buchanan among the group that was recognized.
To qualify for the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, individuals must be a starter or a significant contributor in their last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; record a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better throughout the entire course of undergraduate study; and meet all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
This year the organization recognized 1,089 student-athletes from 297 institutions.
A four-year letterwinner for the Jaguars, Buchanan received his degree from South in December after being named to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll following each of his first three seasons of competition.
He was credited with 86 stops — a total that ranked second on the team — last fall, with 11 of those behind the line of scrimmage, while also breaking up three passes, intercepting another and forcing a fumble as the Jags participated in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. He was the league's initial Defensive Player of the Week after posting a then career high with 12 tackles including one for loss and a pass defensed in a 21-20, come-from-behind victory at Mississippi State, USA's first-ever against a Southeastern Conference school. Following the season, he was an honorable mention all-Sun Belt selection.
The Enterprise, Ala., resident also was chosen second-team all-conference following his junior campaign, when he collected 67 tackles and intercepted two passes. Buchanan ended his career tied for the all-time lead at South with 14 passes broken up while ranking second with 262 total stops, and also currently stands among the top 10 in program history after recording four interceptions.
