MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. — University of South Alabama women's golf team recorded a season-low round for the second-consecutive day to finish tied for sixth at the Sun Belt Conference tournament. The Jaguars were led by MacKenzie Peyton with a top-10 finish tying for seventh with five other individuals.
"The girls had a lot of fight," head women's golf coach Matt Luther said. "Everyone did their job and hung in there did what needed to do in these last two rounds."
South Alabama (315-294-292—901) finished the Sun Belt Tournament tied for sixth with a three-round, tournament-low of 901. Troy (287-300-291—878) claimed the Sun Belt title over runner up Georgia State (296-293-294—883) by five strokes for the top spot.
Peyton (76-72-72—220) finished the highest individually for the Jaguars tied for seventh with a career-low tournament score of 220 through three rounds. The sophomore's last two even-par scores matched her career-low round score. Peyton recorded five birdies on Wednesday, four on the back nine and one on the par-4 second hole. The New Castle, Ky., native recorded three bogeys throughout the round and a double bogey on the par-4 15th hole to put her even par in the final round.
"She's still a couple holes away from winning one of these tournaments," Luther said. "When she really puts it all together she's going to be in contention for this conference tournament I'd imagine. She continues to get better."
Carianne Wright (76-78-69—223), in her final round of collegiate golf as a Jaguar, finished the day with a career-low, 3-under-par 69 to climb 11 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 17th. Wright completed the back nine 1-under par after birdieing on the par-4 16th hole. After the turn, the senior carded three more birdies on the front nine with her lone bogey of the day on the par-4 fifth hole.
"Carianne finished the way you want to finish," Luther said. "She birdied her last two holes and got her career-low round in the 60s from her last two holes of college golf, that's pretty special. She put us over the top to finish with a season-low round."
Elisa Axelsen (87-74-74—236) carded a 3-over-par 75 in her final round as a Jaguar. The senior shot even par through the first six holes on the back nine before birdieing on the par-4 16th and par-3 18th holes to put her 2-under par. After the turn, Axelsen carded a bogey to start the front nine on the par-5 first hole. She birdied the par-4 third hole, but two double bogeys and a bogey on the seventh hole gave her a 75 third round.
"Elisa played great, a hiccup in the middle, but played well," Luther said. "She finished with a couple pars on the last two holes. I couldn't be prouder of how these seniors finished."
Madison Connell (83-75-76—234) finished the tournament with a three-round score of 234 to place her 36th. The junior carded a 4-over-par 76 after recording four bogeys throughout the round with one birdie on the par-5 first hole. Lexi Worrell (80-73-82—235) finished right behind the junior at 37th with a 235 overall score after finishing the day with a 10-over par 82 after a rule incident cost the sophomore three shots.
The Sun Belt Championship tournament marks the end of the Jaguars' season, but Luther said that the girls will carry the momentum into next year.
"These last two rounds of this tournament are great momentum for the returners to understand what they are capable of," Luther said. "We're adding talent next year and it's a great way to start into a new chapter and it's a special way for the seniors to finish their career. They will remember that for the rest of their lives."
