MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - The University of South Alabama women's golf team carded its lowest round of the season - highlighted by a couple individual lows - to climb to seventh in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tuesday.
"We really played with some grit today," women's golf head coach Matt Luther said. "We stayed patient and it paid off. We need to do more of the same tomorrow."
The Jaguars' 294 second-round score was the second-lowest round of the day, just one stroke more than Georgia State (296-293—589). South Alabama (315-294—609) climbed two spots to seventh while only eight strokes outside of a top-5 finish. Troy (287-300—587) leads the field heading into the final day of the league tournament with Georgia State and Texas State (285-305—290) just a stroke apart for second and third.
MacKenzie Peyton (76-72—148) leads the Jaguars after the second round tied for 10th with four other individuals. The sophomore concluded the second round with an even-par 72 to tie her career low. Peyton bogeyed twice throughout the round, only to balance her score with a birdie on the par-5, 483-yard 17th hole and on the par-4, 375-yard eighth hole for even-par.
Lexi Worrell (80-73—153) rose 17 spots on the leaderboard after carding a career-low 1-over-par 73. After teeing off on the 10th hole, Worrell carded two bogeys on the par-5 12th hole and the par-4 16th hole heading into the turn. The sophomore then recorded two bogeys, but three consecutive birdies on the third through fifth holes put Worrell 1-under-par on the front nine.
Carianne Wright (76-78—154) will go into her final round of the SBC Championship tied for 28th with five other individuals after carding a 5-over-par 78 on Tuesday. The senior started the day with a bogey on the par-4 10th hole and recorded one more before the turn on the par-3 18th hole. Out of the first five holes on the front nine, Wright bogeyed three and double bogeyed on the par-3 fifth hole. Wright then ended the round with her only birdie of the day on the par-3 ninth hole.
Madison Connell (83-75—158) shaved eight shots off of her first round score to card a 3-over-par 75. The junior birdied on par-3 ninth hole to end the round after recording four bogeys. Elisa Axelsen (87-74—161) improved 13 shots from her first round on the Fighting Joe Golf Course posting a 2-over-par 74. Axelsen carded three birdies - two on the back nine and one on the final ninth hole - while recording only three bogeys and a double bogey.
