NEW ORLEANS – The University of South Alabama men's and women's tennis teams will be the No. 2 seed at the Sun Belt Championships held this week at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
Play starts Friday morning and continues through Sunday.
The women will take on either No. 7 seed Georgia Southern or No. 10 seed Appalachian State Friday at 11:30 a.m. The semifinals will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
USA has faced both possible quarterfinal opponents during the regular season, defeating Georgia Southern 6-1 and Appalachian State 7-0 in Statesboro, Ga. The wins extended the Jags' series advantage over both schools to 3-0.
The men will play No. 7 seed Appalachian State Friday at 6:30 p.m. No. 3 Texas-Arlington or No. 6 Georgia Southern would await in the semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Jags has won the only two meetings against the Mountaineers, with both coming in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. South Alabama defeated Appalachian State 4-1 two seasons ago in the quarterfinals and won 4-1 last season in the semifinals.
Georgia State received the top seed in the men's bracket while Louisiana-Monroe garnered the top seed in the women's bracket. The winner of each tournament will earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
