UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/6

Date: 3/6
Time: 3:10-5:10 p.m. (CST)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Tyler Grimsley, So., OL, Green Cove Springs, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Grimsley: "Ever since Tyler has been here, he just comes out with a great attitude.  He is tough, he is physical, he enjoys working and he is mentally tough.  He brings that added dimension that we have been looking for up front.  Tyler has had a great couple of days of practice."

Defensive Player of the Day: Darian Mills, So., CB, Winter Haven, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Mills: "Darian did a nice job the first two days, but he had a little bit of adversity because he was holding so we challenged him to stay off of people and play.  His technique has been excellent over the first three days of practice, but the production started to rise today with an interception and a couple of pass break ups.  He has been in this program for three years now, and going into his junior season you are starting to see him mature and take his game to another level.  We're really excited about Darian."

Play of the Day: Maaseiah Francis appeared open for a long gain on the first team offense's final snap during the lone 7-on-7 passing period of the day, but Neiko Robinson recovered to break up the pass at the last moment and prevent the completion.

Team period highlights: There were two 10-minute team periods on Monday, with the first featuring run and play-action pass calls and the second seeing the Jag offense taking snaps from its own 30-yard line.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This was the team's first practice in full pads of the spring season.
-Mills' interception was the lone takeaway for the USA defense the second half of practice, but the unit did record five other passes broken up and four sacks.
-Andrew Reinkemeyer led the Jaguar offense with four receptions in that span, while David Gardner posted three catches, and Sa'Mory Collier and Francis each hauled in a pair of balls.
-During a three-play team competition period in the middle of the session, South's offense converted on third-and-three twice — Evan Orth found Reinkemeyer for a first-down completion while Denzel Foster moved the chains with a rush up the middle — to win the drill.
-The day ended with a three-snap individual competition period, also won by the Jaguar offense as both Grimsley and Zach Davis prevented quarterback sacks.
-Special teams work included a seven-minute period early in the afternoon on punt returns.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On the program's first practice in pads on Monday: "There was very good physicality out there.  I thought the defense was flying around hitting people, and the offensive line showed at times that they can move people off the ball.  It wasn't as crisp as you would want it, we are not anywhere close to being game ready yet.  I have really stressed with our coaches and our players to come out and be good fundamentally; they are starting to get there, but we still have a ways to go."
-On the plan for Wednesday's practice: "We are going to have another physical practice Wednesday.  We will take a week off for Spring Break and bring the guys back the following week, so we have to have a great day Wednesday."
-On the team's performance in the first three practices of the spring: "I think that the energy level is where we need it to be, they are bringing energy every day which is real important.  I think they want to hit and be physical.  I am not satisfied where we are fundamentally in some spots, that's got to get better but it's why we are practicing and have all these days in pads in the spring.  By the end of the spring, if we can be really good fundamentally I will be happy because I know all the plays, the blitzes and the coverages will come together."

Up next: South will hold its final workout prior to Spring Break on Wednesday starting at 3:10 p.m.
