MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama student-athletes Parker Harrell and Genesis Perrymond were inducted into the Mortar Board national honor society in a ceremony conducted at the Student Center Ballroom Friday.
Mortar Board, which was originally founded by societies from four institutions in 1918, is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors. Members of the society are provided opportunities for continued leadership development, to promote service to colleges and universities, and encourage lifelong contributions to the global community.
Harrell — who hails from Baton Rouge, La. — completed her redshirt sophomore season for the Jaguar volleyball program in the fall. She recorded 81 assists and 48 digs in 2016 while helping the Jaguars to a 16-14 finish after posting 167 assists, including five matches with 20 or more, to go along with 44 digs and 11 blocks her first year at the collegiate level. A business administration major, Harrell was on the 2015-16 Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List which includes student-athletes who have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic year.
Perrymond was one of two individuals to start all 31 contests for the women's basketball team last season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per outing while leading the Jags with 89 assists, 47 steals and 45 three-point field goals. As a redshirt freshman, the Lilburn, Ga., native had averages of 5.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, adding 71 assists as USA went 15-15 after earning the fifth seed at the league tournament with an 11-9 Sun Belt record. Perrymond, who is majoring in biomedical sciences, made the SBC Academic Honor Roll while sitting out as a redshirt in 2014-15 and was on the league's Commissioner's List a year ago.
