MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team ended a three-match skid Friday with a 6-1 victory against Louisiana Tech at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improve to 9-4 on the season, while the Lady Techsters dropped to 7-6.
"We played some good tennis," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. "The schedule has been tough these last couple of matches. We played some great competition, and maybe that's kicking in."
In doubles, sophomore
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) dispatched
Angela Lorenzo and
Jill van den Dungen 6-1 on court No. 2, and sophomore
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) and senior
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) won 6-4 over
Marta Sramkova and
Nadia Manjon at No. 3 to take the doubles point.
"We executed in doubles really well," Keyser said. "It slowed down for us a little bit today, but we played some really good tennis."
Stiteler opened singles by defeating
Jazmin Britos 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, and Mitta dropped Manjon 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 3 to give USA a 3-0 lead. Matuskova clinched the victory for South Alabama with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win against Sramkova on court No. 4.
"The beginning of singles was some of the best tennis we've played in a while," said Keyser.
In other singles action, sophomore
Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) rallied to beat
Alba Escalona Perny 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5, and freshman
Leslie Soto Bustamante (Santiago, Chile) bested Dungen 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 on court No. 6. Senior
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) fell to
Sonia Chen 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2.
"For a while it looked like we were going to roll right through them, but they dug in and made it a tough match," Keyser said.
The Jags return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. to face Southern Miss at home.
