Miscellaneous Notes
-The Jaguar defense allowed just 298 yards on 82 snaps during the 90-minute session.
-The unit intercepted three passes — with all of those coming in the shadow of the goal line from Daniels, Jalen Thompson and Darian Mills — and broke up four others.
-The group also was credited with four sacks and five other stops behind the line of scrimmage, with Jeffery Whatley accounting for three of those including a pair of sacks.
-In addition to recording a sack, Finessé Middleton broke up a pair of passes while rushing the quarterback.
-Cole Garvin led the Jags with 92 yards passing highlighted by a 65-yard completion to Sa'Mory Collier that moved the ball to the defense's two-yard line and set up the unit's first points of the day.
-Gavin Patterson began the day by making seven straight field goals from ranges of 20 to 42 yards.
-While the first-team offense converted on 4-of-5 occasions during the first third-down period — needing anywhere from three to five yards — the first-team defense was successful getting a stop on 4-of-5 tries in the second third-down period. USA's second team defense forced a punt on 8-of-10 snaps combined during those same drills.
Head coach Joey Jones
On his impressions of what he saw in the scrimmage: "One of the things that stands out is I think we are a physical football team, there was a lot of hitting going on. We're stronger, which is a great thing. I saw the defense having fun getting after it. Obviously we have things that we need to improve on, but they flew around and hit people, and that's what you want to see especially in an early scrimmage. Offensively I thought we ran the ball well early, there was much improvement on those four- to six-yard runs. We're just not as consistent on offense as we need to be at this point, but that is to be expected."
On who stood out to him individually: "On defense Tyree Turner stood out, he just plays hard every play. He plays his guts out, I like watching him play. Offensively, I thought two receivers stood out — Kawaan Baker and Jordan McCray both made some great catches in traffic."
On defense's ability to force turnovers in the red zone: "It's very important for the defense to be able to do that. They have a lot of confidence down there that they can stop the offense and make them kick the field goal, and that's the goal. But the flip side of that is we can't let that happen on offense, we can't give up a minimum of three points. We want seven, but we have to get at least three so we can't have turnovers down there."
On the third-down competition periods: "On third-and-three to five we were four out of five on offense with the ones, 80 percent is extremely good. But on third-and-six to eight with the ones the defense stopped four out of five, so it was split although the longer the distance got the tougher it was for the offense to make it. I was pleased that they were able to run the football in that third-and-three to five range. Our whole goal this spring has been to be able to run it, and though we've improved we have some more improvement to make."
