KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - University of South Alabama women's golf student-athletes Carianne Wright and Madison Connell both carded 3-over par 75s to lead the Jaguars in the second round of the Kiawah Island Classic Monday afternoon.
"Carianne and Madison made adjustments and played well today," head coach Matt Luther said. "We played better as a team, but still have a lot of work to do."
South Alabama fell one spot to 29th, missing the championship cutoff by seven places. Sun Belt member Coastal Carolina (289-295 - 584) climbed from second place to first after recording an 8-over par 295 team score in the second round. The Chanticleers lead by seven strokes over East Tennessee and eight strokes from host College of Charleston.
College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck (70-68 - 138) leads the field individually after recording a 4-under par 68 in the second round. Malene Krolboll Hanson (69-70 - 139) from Coastal Carolina trails the leader by a stroke with a 5-under par 139 through both rounds.
Wright (79-75 - 154), who sits in a 14-way tie for 76th, recorded a season-low round with a 3-over par 75, her lowest since shooting a 5-over par 76 at the Yale Women's Intercollegiate. The senior ran into bogey trouble early, carding three double bogeys and two bogies on the back nine. She completed the nine holes 4-over par with the help of two birdies. After the turn, Wright shot the best nine holes of any Jaguar, shooting even-par through six holes with two birdies, while recording only one bogey for a 1-under par score on the front nine.
Connell (84, 75 - 159) improved nine strokes from her 12-over par 84 performance on Sunday in the first round and now stands in a tie for 124th with 22 other golfers. The junior carded four bogeys on the back nine, but improved her score heading into the turn with three birdies for a 1-over par. On the front nine, Connell recorded three more bogeys, but was able to finish the day 3-over par shooting a birdie and even-par through the other six holes.
Elisa Axelsen (83-78 - 161) carded a 6-over par 78, four strokes better than her first round to tie for 78th with seven other individuals. Axelsen recorded four bogeys on the back nine to start the day, but shot even for the other five holes. After the turn, the senior had four bogeys but was able to complete the front nine 2-over par with the help of two birdies on the par-5 second hole and the par-4 fifth hole.
MacKenzie Peyton (77-83 - 160 ) and Lexi Worrell (78-82 - 160) closed the second round in a 12-way tie for 146th. Peyton ran into bogey trouble early on, carding five bogeys and two double bogeys on the back nine to shoot 9-over par. The sophomore improved on the front nine, recording a birdie and only three bogeys while shooting even for the other five holes to end the day 11-over par.
Worrell carded 10 bogeys throughout the round along with a triple bogey on the par-3 third hole. The sophomore recorded three birdies, but would follow up her lowest round since October that she shot on Sunday with a 10-over par 82.
For the final round, the top 22 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point (par 72, 5964 yards), while teams 23-43 will play for a flight championship at the par 72, 5,941-yard Oak Point.
