THREE JAGUARS FINISH DAY ONE IN TOP HALF OF KIAWAH ISLAND CLASSIC FIELD

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Three University of South Alabama women's golf players - MacKenzie Peyton, Lexi Worrell and Carianne Wright - completed round one in the top half of the 232-player field at the Kiawah Island Classic on Sunday.

South Alabama finished 28th after the first round of play with a 317 (+29) team score. Ā Jacksonville leads the 43-team field with a 2-under par 286 with host Charleston and Sun Belt member Coastal Carolina three strokes behind in second with a score of 289.Ā 

"We really struggled today," head coach Matt Luther said. Ā "There are adjustments we will need to make going into the second round tomorrow."Ā 

Individually, Louise Persson of Jacksonville and Saskia Sterud of St. John's are tied for first with a 4-under par 68. Ā Three golfers - Jenny Buchanan of Towson, Malene Krolboll Hansen of Coastal Carolina and Elsa Diaz of Richmond - recorded 3-under par 69s and sit tied for third after Sunday's opening round.

Peyton led the Jaguars on day one, carding a 5-over par 77 tying with 17 other individuals for 79th. Ā The sophomore shot 1-over par through the first nine holes, posting even par or better through the first eight which included two birdies. Ā After the turn, Peyton faced bogey trouble, carding five bogeys on the back nine.Ā 

Worrell recorded her best round since the Yale Women's Intercollegiate in October with a 6-over par 78, putting her a 15-way tie for 96th. Ā Worrell started the round with two birdies on the front nine, but she was 3-over par after three bogeys and one double bogey heading into the turn. Ā The sophomore began the back nine with a double bogey, but shot even for five of the nine holes and carded a birdie on the 4-par 15th hole for a 6-over par first round tally.Ā 

Wright was the last Jaguar to finish in the top half of the field, tied with 11 other golfers for 110th with a 7-over par 79. Ā The senior shot even for four of the nine holes on the front, but recorded bogeys on the other five holes for a 6-over par. Ā After the turn, Wright shot even par through the back nine for every hole except for a double bogey on the 15th hole, which added a stroke to her final score.Ā 

Elisa Axelsen finished tied for 173rd with 10 others, recording an 11-over par 83 after eleven bogeys throughout the round. Ā Madison Connell finished the round a stroke behind Axelson (+12) with an 84 in a nine-way tie for 183rd.Ā 

South Alabama will tee off tomorrow morning beginning at 10 a.m on the 10th hole. Ā The Jaguars will be paired with Boston University (+36), Fairleigh Dickinson (+32) and USC Upstate ( +25). Live stats will be available on golfstat.com.Ā
