WOMEN’S GOLF HEADS TO KIAWAH ISLAND SPRING CLASSIC

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The University of South Alabama women's golf team returns to action on Sunday to face a 43-team field in the Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

"A big field equals a great opportunity for us to pick up some wins," head coach Matt Luther said.  "We have a couple of teams from of our conference competing so it will give us a good look of how we stack up."

Among the field are Sun Belt Conference fellow members Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern.  The Chanticleers won the classic as a team last spring with a seven-over par three-round tally and currently lead the league with an average team score of 297.25 through 12 rounds with a round low of 285.  Georgia Southern stands fifth in the conference after averaging a 302.06 team score through 17 rounds with a 287 team-score low.

Two courses will be used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament.  After 36 holes of play, the top 22 teams will play for the championship at par 72, 5,964-yard Osprey Point course during the final round, while the remaining teams will play for a flight championship at Oak Point (par 72, 5,941 yards).

MacKenzie Peyton leads the Jaguars into the event with a 75.85 stroke average which ranks 15th in the Sun Belt.  Peyton placed 11th at the Samford Spring Shootout to open the spring two weeks ago, the second top-20 finish of the season for the Jag sophomore.  Madison Connell also notched her fourth top-20 finish this year at the Samford tourney and paces the Jaguars with a 76.70 stroke average.

The Kiawah Island Spring Classic's first round is slated to tee off holes No. 1 and No.10 beginning at 10:15 a.m. (CT) Sunday morning.  Live stats will be available on golfstat.com.
