MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama No. 28 men's tennis team will head up north to Birmingham, Ala. to face two intrastate opponents this weekend, facing Samford on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and UAB on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Jaguars were a perfect 3-0 last week, defeating Jacksonville State 4-0 and Jackson State 7-0 in a home doubleheader and No. 49 North Florida 4-3 on the road. Rallying from a 3-1 deficit, the win snapped a six-match losing streak against the Ospreys, including five in the last five years.
South Alabama has currently won nine-straight victories for its longest win streak since the 1995 team opened its season 9-0. Included in the win streak is a 6-1 victory on Feb. 12th over No. 30 Georgia State, the only other Sun Belt Conference team ranked.
"These past weeks have been great," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "The guys play at a high level, we had great wins over tough opponents, and we just cracked the top-30 in the rankings. But we are only halfway through the season with lots of tough matches to come. We need to stay focus and go one match at a time. We keep the good momentum going and get ready for Samford and UAB. Those state rivals always look forward to play us, and I know they'll be ready. We need to stick to the game plan and take care of business."
Samford has started its spring season 2-6 with wins against Alabama State (6-1) and Xavier (5-2). The Bulldogs dropped a pair of matches to Auburn on the road last weekend. The Jags own a 12-1 record against the Bulldogs and won seven-straight matches, including a 7-0 win on Feb. 18th last year.
UAB is 4-2 this year and won its first four matches of the season before dropping two matches last weekend to Eastern Tennessee State (4-3) and Georgia State (4-1) in Johnson City, Tenn. The Jags have won 22 of the 32 matches against the Blazers, including 15 of the past 18 meetings.
