MATUSKOVA NAMED SUN BELT WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW ORLEANS – An undefeated week in singles has earned University of South Alabama senior Laura Matuskova the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week award, the league announced Wednesday.

Matuskova, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, wins the honor for the first time in her career.

Playing in the top half of the lineup, Matuskova went 2-0 in singles to help the Jags to a 3-1 week. She dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Diana Monsalve of Jacksonville State at No. 3, then moved up a flight to take on Lucia Solis of Jackson State, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to clinch USA's victory.

In doubles, both of her wins secured the doubles point, as she paired with Leslie Soto Bustamante against Jackson State for a 6-4 win, then teamed with Alina Zolotareva to defeat Southeastern Louisiana 6-0.

In the spring, Matuskova is 7-0 at Nos. 2-4, and has won eight straight dating back to the fall.

Matuskova and the Jaguars go on the road for their next two matches, taking on No. 35 Wichita State on Friday and Oklahoma on Saturday.
