NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama baseball left-hander Zach Melton was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Melton tossed six no-hit innings while striking out nine and issuing one walk in his first career start in Saturday's 32-0 combined shutout of Eastern Illinois. The Foley, Ala., native retired the final 13 batters he faced in the game following a two-out walk in the second inning.

Melton combined with left-hander Andy Arguelles and right-hander Tyler Perez to record the Jaguars' first shutout of the season, and the first since USA shut out Texas-Arlington on May 27 in last year's SBC Tournament in San Marcos, Texas. He is the first Jaguar southpaw to be named SBC Pitcher of the Week since Locke St. John earned the honor on April 14, 2014.

Melton is tied for the SBC lead in ERA (0.00), opposing batting average (.000) and wins, ranks tied for third in strikeouts (9) and tied for fourth in innings pitched (6.0).

South Alabama is scheduled to return to action on Wed., Feb. 22, when it hosts Alabama A&M at 3 p.m. at Stanky Field.
