KANSAS CITY – University of South Alabama senior
Rio Hardy and junior
Hannah Godfrey were voted to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-South Region Teams, it was announced this week.
Hardy, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, was tabbed to the second team, and Godfrey, the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, was placed on the third team. It is the first all-region honor for both Hardy and Godfrey.
A native of Workington, England, Hardy finished second in school history in both career points (103) and goals (43), and is the school's all-time leader in game-winning goals (13).
The three-time first-team all-conference honoree scored a team-high 16 goals and 37 points this season and had six game-winning goals, to lead the league in all three categories. Her goals total is tied for third in school history and her points total is tied for sixth.
She was named to the Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player after scoring four goals – including a brace in the final – with two assists, to lead the Jaguars to their fifth straight tournament title.
Godfrey anchored a defense that shared the conference lead with eight clean sheets and ranked second with a 0.93 goals against average. The Thornton-Cleveleys, England native played all but 10 minutes this season and recorded one assist. A two-time all-Sun Belt performer, Godfrey played a key role in the Jags not allowing multiple goals in a school-record 16 consecutive games.
Since the start of the 2016 season, a period where Godfrey has started all but one match, South Alabama has recorded 20 shutouts, which is the most by any Sun Belt school.
