“INSIDE JAGNATION” — SOUTH ALABAMA ATHLETICS PODCAST — EPISODE 65

MOBILE, Ala. – The guest this week on "Inside JagNation," the weekly podcast of the University of South Alabama Athletics, is former women's basketball student-athlete and current head varsity girl's basketball coach at Baker High School Lauren Walker.

In this edition Walker talks about entering the season as a head coach for the first time, what she has done since being named the Lady Hornets head coach to prepare for the upcoming campaign, and how and when she prepares for basketball while also working as a physical education instructor at the school.  She also discusses whose influence has played a part in her development as a coach, what she has taken from previous jobs as an assistant coach and applied to her program at Baker HS, what style of play she would like to see the Lady Hornets employ and her expectations for the upcoming season.

Other topics on the podcast include how old she was when she first played basketball and why she got involved in the sport, when she believed that playing at the collegiate level and earning a scholarship would be possible, and why she came to South Alabama.  Walker talks about when she figured out she wanted to be a coach and teacher, and what she applies from her student-athlete experience today.

Originally from Cabot, Ark., Walker lettered for the Jaguar women's basketball program from 2009-12, playing in 108 contests while helping South to a 71-53 overall mark.  As a junior she ranked third in the Sun Belt Conference with a 42.7 three-point field-goal percentage, concluding her career among the top 10 in school history after connecting on 35 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Since earning her degree from USA in health and physical education in 2013, Walker has held assistant varsity and head junior varsity coaching positions at Satsuma, Foley — where she was also the head volleyball coach — and Daphne Highs.
