MAYSON, FORMER SOUTH ALABAMA WOMEN’S GOLF COACH, PASSES AWAY

DOTHAN, Ala. – June Mayson, the first University of South Alabama women's golf coach in program history, passed away at her home on Sunday.

A graveside celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. (CST) on Wednesday at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Ala. with burial to follow.  In lieu of flowers, it is June's wish that donations be made to Wounded Warriers of the Wiregrass; please contact Tye Anderson at 239.272.7086 for arrangements.

Mayson was born and raised Mobile, growing up on the Spring Hill College golf course where her father, Alvin Buckhaults, was the founder and golf pro.  She won the Alabama State Women's Golf Championship four times (1957, '59, '62, and '74) and was also a three-time state Senior Women's Champion (1984, '87, and '88).  She served as LPGA professional teacher at the Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile as well.

In 1986 Mayson became the first-ever head coach of the Jaguar women's golf coach program.  She led the team to a top-20 national ranking during her tenure, was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 — her final season guiding South — and was inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Mayson had a special place in her heart for teaching golf and formed vast, lifelong relationships through it.  In addition to golf, her passions included gardening, cooking, learning and spending time with her large family.
