The University of South Alabama men's tennis program added two newcomers prior to the fall season. One of the two newcomers is freshman Nathan Fruh from Fairhope Aires, Alabama. Fruh spoke with USAJaguars.com about when he started playing tennis, his path to South Alabama and his playing style.
Â
When did you start playing tennis?
I started playing when I was in the eighth grade. I started playing after a graduation party and fell in love with it. I've been playing it ever since.
Â
Talk me on your journey to South Alabama.
I've known Nick (Brochu) for about three or four years and he's been talking to me for a while. He showed interest in me and my mom also works on campus. It was an open door and he gave me a great opportunity to play here.
Â
Who do you model your game after?
I model it after the more aggressive players like Marin Cilic or Roger Federer. I like to use a big serve and a big forehand.
Â
How would you describe your playing style?
I have a big serve and big forehand. I try to take care of the point early. I try to keep the rallies shorter and dictate the points.
Â
What do you think your biggest strength on the court is?
My serve.
Â
What are you trying to improve on for this season?
My weaknesses are my volleys and my backhand slides. I've been working on both of them with Coach Brochu.
Â
What do you think the biggest difficulty will be for you going from high school to collegiate tennis?
I have to be more disciplined in college. You can't get away with too many errors and you have to be sharper. The competition will also be a lot harder. I have to be more focused and disciplined.
Â
Who has been the biggest influence on your tennis career?
My parents. They have been huge encouragers. I can't tell you how many times they've taken me hours away from the house to go practice with my previous coach. All the stuff they do for me is crazy.
