“INSIDE JAGNATION” — SOUTH ALABAMA ATHLETICS PODCAST — EPISODE 61

MOBILE, Ala. – This week's guest on "Inside JagNation" is University of South Alabama assistant baseball coach Chris Prothro.

In this episode of the official podcast of Jaguar Athletics, Prothro discusses his responsibilities as the program's recruiting coordinator, who he believes plays key roles in helping Jag baseball's recruiting efforts — which resulted in USA's incoming class being rated among the top 25 nationally by Collegiate Baseball last month — the coaching staff's approach to recruiting and what he does during a typical day on the road during a recruiting trip.  He also explains what the staff is looking for from potential student-athletes, what excites him about this year's incoming class and his interest in joining USA's coaching staff.

Other topics Prothro addresses include when he began playing baseball and why, what other sports he participated in while growing up, when he thought it would be possible to earn a scholarship to compete at the collegiate level and what he did as a college student to prepare to enter the coaching field.

Prothro is in his third season on the Jaguar coaching staff, having helped the Jaguars to an 82-43 overall record the last two years while going 43-17 in Sun Belt Conference action; during that time USA has won one league regular-season championship and one tournament title while making a pair of NCAA Regional appearances.  Originally from Shreveport, La., he began his collegiate career at Northwestern State but after two years with the Demon program and a season in junior college he finished up at Arkansas State, where he would receive his undergraduate degree in history in 2005.  Prothro's initial coaching job was an assistant position at North Iowa Area C.C., and after two years at the school he became an assistant at Nicholls where he would work eight seasons — including four as recruiting coordinator — before joining the staff at South.
