MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team recently completed its third week of fall practice. USA played seven intrasquad games in the first three weeks of fall drills.
Outfielder Michael Sandle leads the team in batting average (.478), home runs (2), slugging percentage (.913) and on-base percentage (.556) through seven contests, and is tied with Dylan Hardy for the team lead in hits (11). Hardy ranks second in batting average (.440), while Paul Russo ranks third at .348.
Travis Swaggerty leads the team with four stolen bases, and shares the team lead in RBI (5) with Russo and Colton Thomas. Wells Davis leads in walks (9), while Drew LaBounty ranks second in base on balls (7).
The Jags are hitting .292 as a team through seven games, along with 23 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 55 RBI, 19 stolen bases and a .405 team on-base percentage.
Sandle and Hardy share the team lead in multiple-hit contests (4), and LaBounty and Sandle each carry a team-best seven-game on-base streak into the next intrasquad game.
Six Jaguar pitchers have not allowed a run thus far this fall: Conner Jednat, Chase Shell, Sean Trimble, Reid Frazier, Tyler Carr and Michael Marra. Zach Greene and Patrick McBride share the team lead in strikeouts (8). McBride leads the staff in innings pitched (7.0). The Jaguar pitching staff has struck out 70 batters in 87 2/3 innings pitched this fall.
Game 1 – Red 5, Blue 4
Colton Thomas went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, one run scored and one stolen base to help lead the Red team to a 5-4 win in the first intrasquad of the fall on Oct. 13.
Right-hander Sean Trimble struck out three and allowed just one hit in two scoreless relief innings for the Red squad. JoJo Booker struck out one and allowed one hit in one inning pitched to earn the save.
Felix Aberouette finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored to lead the Blue team at the plate. Zach Greene tossed two shutout innings, and struck out four while allowing only one hit for the Blue staff, and Blue left-hander Conner Jednat struck out two, issued one walk and allowed two hits in two scoreless relief innings.
Game 2 – Red 8, Blue 6
Hardy went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to help lead the Red team to an 8-6 win in the second intrasquad of the fall on Oct. 14.
LaBounty added a home run, one RBI and two runs scored, and Will Luft finished 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and one run scored for the Red squad.
Sandle went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and one run scored to lead the Blue team at the plate. Russo added two hits, one run scored and one stolen base, and Hunter Brittain drove in two runs.
Right-hander Tyler Carr allowed three hits in two shutout innings to lead the Red pitching staff. Reid Frazier and Chase Shell each tossed two scoreless innings for the Blue team.
Game 3 – Red 6, Blue 1
Four Red team pitchers combined to shut out the Blue team over the final four frames en route to a 6-1 win in the third intrasquad game on Oct. 17 at Stanky Field.
Greene, Alex Adair, McBride and Lambert each tossed one scoreless inning in the win. Greene and Lambert each recorded two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Luft went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base, and Hardy added two hits, including a double, three runs scored and one stolen to lead the Red squad offensively. Thomas tripled, drove in three runs and scored one run, and Swaggerty finished with two RBI, one run scored and one stolen base.
Aberouette went 2-for-2 with one RBI to lead the Blue team offensively, while Brendan Donovan added two hits, including a double. Jednat and Austin Gossman each tossed one scoreless inning for the Blue team.
Game 4 – Blue 2, Red 0
Melton, Frazier and Jednat combined for a one-hit shut out over the Red team in the fourth fall intrasquad at Stanky Field on Oct. 20.
Melton struck out one and issued two walks without allowing a run or hit in two innings. Frazier recorded one strikeout, one walk and allowed only one hit in his two innings of work. Jednat issued one walk without allowing a hit in two innings pitched.
Sandle went 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run scored to lead the Blue team at the plate. Reid Powers added a double and one RBI. Carter Perkins had the lone hit for the Red team, which came in the third inning.
Red left-hander Andy Arguelles struck out three and issued three walks while allowing one hit in two scoreless innings pitched. Marra and Adair tossed one scoreless inning apiece for the Red squad.
Game 5 – Red 5, Blue 3
Eight Red starters recorded at least one hit in a 5-3 win over the Blue team in the fifth intrasquad of the fall on Oct. 22 at Stanky Field.
Evan Richards led the Red offensive attack, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Thomas added a double and an RBI, and Swaggerty finished with one hit and two RBI for the Red squad.
Russo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored to lead the Blue team at the plate, while Andrew Bates added a hit and one RBI.
Red right-handers Tyler Carr and Sean Trimble each tossed two scoreless innings, and Alex Rodman pitched on shutout inning to earn the save. Shell struck out one, issued one walk and allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for the Blue squad.
Game 6 – Red 12, Blue 4
The Red team pounded out 14 hits, led by Perkins and Hardy, en route to a 12-4 win over the Blue team in the sixth intrasquad of the fall on Oct. 24 at Stanky Field.
Perkins went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, and Hardy finished 3-for-4 with one double, two RBI and one run scored. Wells Davis went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored, and Swaggerty finished 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored.
Russo finished 3-for-4 with a double, one home run, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Blue team offensively. Luft added a hit and one RBI for the Blue squad.
Right-hander Tyler Perez issued two walks, but did not allow a hit in two scoreless relief innings for the Red team. Caleb Yarbrough tossed one perfect relief inning for the Blue team.
Game 7 – Red 2, Blue 0
Carr, Trimble and McBride combined to shut out the Blue team 2-0 in the seventh intrasquad of the fall on Oct. 26 at Stanky Field.
Carr allowed three hits in two innings pitched, while Trimble struck out two and issued one walk with two hits allowed in his two innings of work. McBride struck out two and allowed only one hit in two innings pitched to earn the save.
Andrew Cash finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base to lead the Red team at the plate. Russo added a hit, one RBI and one run scored. Sandle went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Blue team offensively.
Left-hander Zach Melton struck out one, issued two walks and allowed only one hit in two scoreless innings pitched for the Blue squad, while Lambert struck out four against one walk without allowing a hit in his two innings of work.
