TULSA, Okla. – Sophomores
Clement Marzol and
Loic Cloes took both of their doubles matches at the ITA All-American Championships to move into the round of 16 and Marzol took his singles match to move on to the second round in singles competition on Monday in Tulsa.
Â
"The best thing about today was that they both played three matches, about seven hours of tennis, and they played their best tennis in the last four games," USA head coach
Nick Brochu said. "It's great to see our guys raise their level when the tank is empty. It shows a lot of heart and I'm very proud of them."
Â
The duo took down Penn State's Christos Antonopoulos and Alp Sentay in their first doubles match of the day, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, before upsetting No. 56 Ewan Moore and Constantin Schmitz of Tulane in straight-sets, 7-6 (5), 7-5. Cloes and Marzol overcame a 3-5 deficit in the second set against Moore and Schmitz to take the round of 32 match.
Â
"Against Tulane, we had a great start with solid play in the first set. We made some mistakes in the second from lack of focus, but pulled it together and played our best tennis of the day," Brochu said.
Â
Marzol defeated Utah's David Micevski in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-4, to move on to the second round.
Â
"Clement started the match very aggressive and got on top from the beginning. He had a little letdown in the second set, but it was a good test mentally and physically for him," Brochu commented.
Â
No. 121-ranked Cloes dropped a tightly contested three set battle to Columbia's No. 73-ranked Jackie Tang, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Cloes moves into the consolation round on Tuesday.
Â
"Being his first college tournament, Loic performed well," Brochu said. "He will learn and become more mature. That's why we came here."
Â
Marzol will take on No. 92-ranked Valentin Vacherot in the second round Tuesday. With second and third round wins on Tuesday Marzol would qualify for the main draw in singles competition as he and his doubles partner Cloes look to seal a main draw appearance with a victory on Tuesday against Texas A&M's Juan Carlos Aguilar and Jordi Arconada.
Â
Main draw action begins on Thursday (Oct. 5).
