MEN'S TENNIS DOMINATES SINGLES ON DAY ONE OF SAMFORD INVITATIONAL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The South Alabama men's tennis team won six of its nine matches, including five of six singles matchups, on Friday at the Samford Invitational.
 
SINGLES
-Clement Marzol defeated Belmont's Vincent Sterkens in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, and Loic Cloes took down Hendrik Inno of Belmont 6-4, 6-2, in straight sets.
-Belmont's Stephen Goldman defeated Nathan Fruh 6-2, 6-2.
-Lucas Gonzalez dominated Zak Khan of Belmont shutting him out 6-0, 6-0.
-Olivier Gingras defeated Jake Briggs of Belmont 6-2, 6-2.
-Santiago Di Loreto came back after dropping the first and trailing Belmont's David Faulker 2-4 in the second to take the three set battle 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
 
DOUBLES
-.Cloes and Marzol defeated Alexey Nestrov and Grant Stuckey of Alabama 6-0.
-Gingras and Fruh fell to UAB's Tom el Safadi and Marlon Goering, 6-2, while Gonzalez and Di Loreto fell to Giovani Pasini and Fernando Vargas of UAB, 6-2.
 
NOTES
-Cloes and Marzol are 3-1 in doubles during the fall.
-Gonzalez is now 3-1 in singles play this fall.
 
THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Nick Brochu
On the day's action: "We may not have played our best tennis today, but competed well and won six of the nine matches. We need to be more consistent in doubles. We made too many mistakes and that cost us at times. Tomorrow needs to better."
 
On Di Loreto's comeback: "I was happy to see Santiago comeback from down 2-6, 2-4, to win a long three-set match. He fought well for three hours and showed that our conditioning sessions paid off.
 
UP NEXT
The Jaguars will compete in day two of the Samford Invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
